Fall Mantel 2012 Edition

It’s that time again.  Time to decorate the mantel in its fall best.

This year I went with a sexy librarian/quirky owl theme.  Or old lady clutter.  Either way.  I like it.

DecorandtheDogMantel2012-7

I stole books (in fall colors) from our office.  Hooray for in home shopping.  The owl on the left is from TJMaxx (last season).  (I used it last year's fall mantel.)  The owl on the right is from Menard’s.  The clock was also stolen from the office.  It was originally purchased from an antique store.

Is your house ready for fall?  Have you turned the heat on yet?  We were tempted this week-end but toughed it out.  Are you digging the sexy librarian/quirky owl theme?  I need to trademark that one.  A Décor and the Dog original.

  1. I love how old, random books look on mantels or on bookshelves. All of my books are softcover and glossy. They would look really tacky on our mantel. Where did you pick yours up?

    1. I pick them up at the Salvation Army or thrift stores. I try not to spend over 50 cents/book.

  2. Very cute! I like how you added books to the display. Owls are quirky too (I'm really into them this year!).

We haven't decorated for fall yet, other than a few potted mums outside.

  3. I'm lovin' the old lady clutter, lol. And who would have thought that cute little owl would be from Menards! There are a few owls on my fall mantel also =)

  4. Rachel thanks you for supporting the sexy librarian theme. You know I'm down with book decorating... and channeling my inner-geriatric.

  6. Ooh, I love the owls! Especially the one with his head cocked to one side. I love it. I don't decorate much for the seasons (laziness, pure laziness) but I love fall mantels.

  7. I wish we had a mantle I could decorate. Love the owls, especially the guy on the right.
PS - I hear sexy librarian/quirky owl is very in this season.

  9. Love it! Mine is done nothing too fancy! I said to my hubby this morning is 62 degrees inside cold enough for the heat....not yet! He likes to push it to October! Burr! Have a wonderful Monday!

  10. very cute! I love the owls and books- I need to get my butt to Menards! We decorated inside this weekend, but I still need to work on the outside - we need to get some more stuff for that since we lived in a townhome last year, and weren't really allowed to do outdoor decorations.
I've broken down and turned on the heat a couple times. This morning it was 39 degrees, and it's been in the 50s for most of the day since last week. It's not up very high though. ;-)

  12. The owl holding up the book is pretty much my favorite thing.

  13. I'm loving the owls! And the books. I should've had you style my mantel while you were up here, because I can't figure out what to do. Awesome.

I caved and turned on the heat. It was 60* in our house and I was cold.

    1. I hate birds too. Seriously. Huge bird phobia....like the real owl that lives in the trees behind our living room...creepy. I bet he's watching me as I type this. This cartoon owls I can handle.

  22. I'm relieved that it's sexy librarian/quirky owl and not quirky librarian/sexy owl. That would be weird. I love it :-)

  23. Look at you, ignoring your bird phobia in the name of fall decor.

Your mantle is adorable. Or sexy. Whichever you prefer.

  24. I love this, Michelle. Especially the books. I need some
More old books in my life. My mantel still has 4th of July
    Decor. I am awesome.

  25. This is definitely sexy librarian! And that little quirky owl is adorable. It reminds me of the one from the Disney sing-a-long movies from back in the day...

  26. Love owls, love books--so it looks great to me! I need to step away from the blog reading before I start doing crazy things like redecorating my mantle every season....I think it's too late, though--I'm already eyeing my oddly gothic mantle and picturing Halloween stuff there....

  28. I found you on Centsational Girl and as soon as I saw the tv above the mantel, I had to check it out! We have ours above the fireplace as well and it's a new challenge to figure out decorating around it. Yours looks great!

    2. Hey that's why I'm here, too! I was hoping to see TONS of TV-above-the-mantles...but was a little disappointed.

      Until.
      I.
      Came.
      Here.

Thank you. I'm taking notes...the first one is: heighten the ceiling by about three feet.

      ;)

      Looks good!
