Summer To-Do List: House Edition

Are you a list maker?  I am in every aspect of my life…except for house projects.  That’s about to change today!

Our week-ends during the summer are packed!! Packed full of fun with family and friends but that leaves little time for house projects (as you may have noticed in my lack of substantial house related posts).  We spend our week nights doing laundry, mowing, cleaning, etc. which leaves little time for projects (and no one wants to read a post about me cleaning dirty underwear).  When we do have time for projects we seem to forget what we were going to tackle and end up doing nothing.  It’s time for a change.

We have some free week-ends coming up and here are the plans…slightly lofty plans but still manageable.  We built a house in 8 months…I think we can tackle a few decor projects in 3 months.

What do we hope to accomplish?

Mudroom:

Remember our big mudroom plans??  Yeah, the mudroom still looks like the before picture.  This room will probably be first up on our to-do list.

Kitchen Shelf?:

If you follow me on Pinterest, you may have noticed a slight new obsession with shelves over windows or doors.  I think a shelf holding vintage kitchen items would look pretty over our patio door?  I’m not completely sold but I think it may work.  What are your thoughts?

Girly Laundry Room:

Our laundry room is a hot MESS.  I can’t even believe I am posting these photos.  I am hoping to shame myself into motivation.  The rest of our house was shot as is…I’m a slight neat freak but I do have my dark secrets…and this is one of them…the shame!

I have big plans for this room.  I’m thinking lighter walls and girly.  I think Nate has been in the laundry room 3 times since we have moved in so he won’t even notice if I have a little pink in here…

Bed Frame:

Our bed needs a bed frame to go with our DIY’ed headboard copy cat.  I can’t find a bedskirt that I like and I think a bed frame would give the room a cleaner look. I’m thinking another West Elm knock-off is in store. Ike flew off the bed in excitement when he heard about this plan…

Guest Bathroom:

Our guest bathroom needs a coat of Valspar’s Gravity…to coordinate with our guest bedroom.

Now I need your opinions on the shower curtain situation (why do I think of Jersey Shore every time I type that word?…focus).

Should I go with a white shower curtain for a spa-like feel or something more bold?  I’m afraid a white shower curtain may be too much white in the room but I also feel that it would look clean and crisp against the grey walls.  I’m open to all opinions…

Guest Bedroom Gallery Wall:

Our guest bedroom is getting a gallery wall.  I have ideas in my head.  I just need to get to work on making the prints/printing them out.  I think I also need to paint some frames.  Again, I will take opinions.  Black frames, white frames, yellow frames, a mix?  Glad I went with a white comforter in this room…that dog was on a roll during this photo session…

Outdoor Patio:

I recently showed you our deck but we also have another backyard space….and it needs a little TLC.  Neither of us has a good vision for this space but we know that it needs cleaned up (hello power washer) and at least some hanging baskets.  We are also going to look for some clearanced furniture to replace our 5 year old Wal-Mart special…which is still holding strong…

Kitchen Backsplash:

If we get really ambitious, we will tackle our kitchen backsplash…but this may need to wait until fall…or later because we are the most indecisive people on the planet solar system…

There you have it.  Our summer to-do list!  What’s on your to-do list?  Also, feel free to share any opinions/ideas on our oncoming projects!

  1. I am obsessed with Ike! He's like Rocco's brutha from anotha mutha!

I'd do either a soft waffle weave spa curtain in the bathroom. Since it's the guest room it might not get dirty at all. If it does, those things can go right in the washer & be as good as new.

I am most excited about the gallery wall! I'm thinking thin yellow (spray painted) frames with white mats and black & white photos.

I love Ike. That is really the point of this comment. LOL!

  3. I love your dog photos! And I am not a list maker. Although I have my moments. Occasionally I write lists like crazy (and never look at them again).

  4. Your dog is hilarious (and adorable!)

I think you are going to be super busy - and I can't wait to see the results of all of your hard work.

  7. We're working on garage organization, and planning a garage sale. I'm not planning anything else till that's done! (I don't want to get distracted by more "fun" projects, lol!)

  8. Totally love your list because I can't wait to see it all come to life!! I'm a total list maker. I had a list of everything we need to do before we sell our house. I think I threw that one away, though. And the basement list. And the kitchen remodel list. And and and. I'm a project manager by trade so I think it just comes with the territory. My husband, by the way, HATES my list making/project managing ways. Haha!

ps - totally vote "yes" on the white shower curtain. I think it'll look crisp and spa-like in that room.

  9. Love the shelf over the door idea. Enjoyed hearing about what all your to do list included. Mine is about as long... I need to finish off my studio, redo the laundry room, do the upstairs bathroom and so on... Love the Ike photo. At first I read his name as IKEA! Haha! That isn't a bad name, kind of funny. (Sorry I am making myself laugh.) Busy summer, girl!

  10. I would get more of the material you used on that chair; I think the yellow zig zag would look great in the bathroom...

  11. That's quite an impressive to-do list! Do you break it down even more or just know in your head what you have to do? I'm not much of a list person, but I'm finding that between blogging, DIYing going to school to learn about interior design I need to start making lists.
I think this is the first time I've seen your kitchen. Those cabinets are gorgeous. Keep those pics coming of Ike. I can't get enough of him!!!

  12. i love lists!! I'm with you on the mudroom project, ours is looking just slightly better than the before (by better, I mean worse since it must get worse before it gets better!)...more about that this week :). As for the shower curtain, IMO, do a bold pattern! Especially with the gray walls. The great thing about shower curtains is they are not expensive and you could always change it out if you don't like it!

oh and PS- the picture of Ike flying off the bed is my favorite Ike pic of all time!!

PPS- for the frame wall i am thinking black frames with white matting might look good!

  13. Can we have your Wal-Mart special patio furniture if you replace it? I'm 100% serious!

And I agree with the white shower curtain. It would look very crisp and clean!

  14. Those pics of your dog are priceless. How did you ever capture that one of him flinging himself off the bed?! I make lists, too...I love crossing stuff off! Sometimes I write something on the list that I already did, just so I can scribble it off triumphantly. Does that make me weird?

P.S.I think a post on dirty laundry would be 100% appropriate and well-received, particularly if there are pink girly accents in the background. Very Susie Homemaker. ;)

  15. Wow! Sounds like a busy summer (but good, of course). If we could get our house up for sale this summer, I'd be a happy girl. Oh yeah, and finish our other house.

PS - I have shelves above the windows in our kitchen and LOVE THEM. Do it. I love the extra space for pretty things.

  16. I love lists. Sometimes I'll write a task on my list that I've already completed just to have the satisfaction of crossing it off. Yup, I'm THAT person.

Anyway, it looks like you have some fun projects coming up. I'm dying to see how you girlify your laundry room :)

  17. My GOSH I cannot get enough of Ike pictures! I love when they run around in a frenzy like that... Oh terriers and their boundless energy! Have you thought about a chevron shower curtain? They're graphic without being a cheesy beach or lighthouse scene *puke* and they're available in a range of colors. Just a thought =)

And I LOVE the idea of making a summer list, maybe I'll have to do the same... as soon as I find my way out from underneath my skip trowel and drywall mud ;)

    Great inspiring post!

  18. I love reading you posts! I have a list of to dos aswell...want to get to the finish already!

Your dog is just like my cat...has to be part of the action.

look forward to seeing your finished work!

  19. I think everyone has a summer "to do" list. Ike is adorable. A home is not a home without a dog. Ike is obviously an important part of your home and family. Blessings!

  20. Love the list...can't wait to see what you are able to knock out. And your dog....hilarious! I think you should rent his services out to real estate agents taking pictures for listings.

  21. Looks like an amazingly awesome to-do list, and those pictures of Ike are absolutely A-MAZING!!!! So cute!!!!!

As for feedback... I would definitely do a colorful/patterned/visually interesting shower curtain instead of white! White is gorgeous but might be overly sterile since you already have lots of white (which I LOVE). And I CANNOT wait to see your DIY'd bed frame! :)
