Edge Painted Chair

Things you should know about me:

1. I can’t rollerskate.

2. I like butter on chocolate Pop-Tarts.

3. I’m a chicken when it comes to decorating.

Remember these chairs I picked up while doing some birthday thrifting?

thrift store chairs

I really wasn’t appalled by their honey oak appearance.  I was just appalled by it in my craft room.  My first reaction was to paint them white.  Many of you suggested coral.  I like coral. But white is safe. Coral is brave.  And colorful.  And scary.  (See #3 above.)

So in true Michelle fashion, I painted the chairs white.  And they were boring.

I guess even chicken girl needs some color every now and then. But not too much color.  That’s frightening. So I comprised.

Edge Painted Chair

I painted the edges coral (Sherwin Williams Dishy Coral like my button).

Whoa, Right?  So. Much. Color.  I’m wild.

I was inspired by those doors with only the edges painted.  I’m totally too chicken to paint a door edge but a chair edge I can handle.

Now I need to get to work on some art for above that sewing table!  I might add a little something something to the back of those chairs one of these days.  I just need to gather my courage to do so.

What do you think of the colored edges?  Are you a decorating chicken?  Any fellow butter on Pop-Tarts lovers?

  2. Oooh, these are great! I think they'd look fun with a coral stencil on the back!

  3. Love the colored edge! And I second Annabel, a stencil on one of the sides would be awesome, too!

  4. 1) PEANUT butter on chocolate poptarts
    2) Love the coral chair edges -- now how about a coral TABLE edge?
    3) Depending on how much actual use your sewing table is going to get, may I suggest pegboard over it, to hold things like scissors, trim spools, measuring devices, etc. I have half pegboard and half corkboard (to pin up pattern pieces, renderings, etc. out of the way but easy to reference while I'm working)and I love it!

    Love your blog!

  13. Very cool! Love the touch of color with the white. Nice decision. I don't understand how people of "our" age don't know how to roller skate!!

  16. livin on the edge you are! I dig it. It ties in nicely with your buttons. You can go wild with your art. If you think it's too much, then just take it down. Problem solved. Time to go Jackson Polluck on that wall :)

  17. Looks GREAT! How comfortable are the chairs? I am in dire need of new dining room chairs and what I love is super spendy. Thanks for the inspiration.

  18. The coral is lovely! If you are feeling like really living on the edge, it would also be cute to stencil an image on the backs of the chairs facing the room. Maybe in the same coral?

  19. This looks great! I would have never thought to do that. If you do a fun curtain, make sure this color is in there! It will really POP!

  21. I love the peek of color. The chairs came out beautifully!

I'm not sure about butter on pop tarts lol!

  22. Butter on a pop tart?!?! Now that is something I've never heard of before. But I say, whatever floats your boat! :)

Oh, and those chairs....AMAZING! I love the painted edge detail way better than if the whole chairs was one color. Its a lot more interesting that way. Great job, Michelle! :)

  23. I gotta say, I'm a fan of the edges being coral! It's a nice pop of color :)

  24. Hmm, butter on a poptart huh? Interesting. I really can't say anything because I believe that all bread should be butter FIRST. Regardless of what topping will follow. Yay, butter!

I love these chairs! They definitely turned out super cute with the coral edge. Now paint that accent wall coral too! You already got the paint out, after all. :)
I'm excited to see what are you put over the desk. I've been enarmoured with the idea of clipboards as the basis for a gallery wall of sorts. I think it would be great in a craft room so you can add inspiration / fabric swatches etc.

  26. perfecto! I would have never thought of that. they look so modern and snazzy and stylish now.

butter on poptarts just sounds double the calories to me lol :(

  27. I love the pop of color! It'll be great if you decide to change up colors in the sewing room, too, since you won't have to completely repaint the entire chair.

Not sure why, but the bright edge feels a little retro 80s to me and I totally love it! :) Maybe because it looks almost neon against the white? I don't know, but I dig it! :)

  28. Butter on everything!

And the edges look so great that I think you should paint one side of the chairs coral. Back side, seat side, whichever.

  29. This is super cool! I love the hot pink edges!

  30. I don't roller skate either. Last time I did, I broke my wrist. Not cool. haha.

I love the edges done in the bright colour. It's a fun detail and more interesting to me than if the whole chair was that colour. Great idea!

  31. I love them! I think they turned out better than just painting the whole chair.

  32. Okay, the butter on chocolate pop tarts thing is kind of freaking me out. But the coral chair edges are totally cool. I actually think that full on coral chairs could have been too much, so I think you made a good call! But then again, I'm a wimp, too.

  33. I love the chairs! I did the painted edge on Ramona's art work for the last pinterest challenge. It's such a great way to add color without being so in your face. The coral is perfect!

  34. I love the little addition of color! Baby steps :)

  35. I love it. I'm a total decorating chicken (um, duh) but I love the hint of color. Just enough to make the chairs something special. I call this a win.

  36. Bawk, bawk. (That was my chicken impression.) No seriously. I am a chicken, too. (That's why my chicken impression was so convincing.) I like the coral edges!

  37. I love this! It's such a great simple piece with a wonderful pop of color!

  38. Love the chairs! Finally another butter on PopTarts person! Butter on strawberry sprinkle is my favorite.

  39. I love it! It works perfectly--I wouldn't have been able to paint the whole thing either, but the coral is a such a great little touch.

  40. total.knock.out.
That coral edge is just what your room needed. Can't wait to see what you have in mind for above your sewing table!

  41. I actually think this was a really clever idea. So sassy!!

  42. Love it. When I was little I used to butter my lettuce.

    ReplyDelete
  43. LOOOOVE IT. What a creative solution. They're all: "Hey! I'm here, FYI!" but without being like: "PAY ATTENTION TO MEEEEEE!"

    ReplyDelete
  44. Oooooh I love the paint job! I liked these chairs to begin with but the edge detail really bumps them up a notch! :)

  45. I like butter on brown sugar cinnamon Pop Tarts. Love the chair makeover. It's kind of like some pregnant chicks. From the back you can't tell they're preggo, but when they turn to the side you're all like "whoa!" but in a good way.

  46. I am in LOVE!!! What a great idea!! I am having a love affair with coral right now. We were shopping for paint samples and I ALMOST had enough courage to paint an accent wall that gorgeous color. But I chickened out. Maybe if it was my own house I would have, but I was afraid it would have been too much. I love those chairs and wanna steal em for my kitchen nook!

  47. I really love this! I just bought a pair of barstools for our new condo that I want to do this with. Any advice on how to do the edge without painting the rest of the chair?
