Life with Two Dogs

Diggin’ It will return next week.  I can only have follow through for so long….until life gets in the way.  I’m preferring a mindless post today and I am the master of this blog.  Mwah ha ha.

Those of you that follow me on Instagram know that we had a houseguest this week.

This is Ike’s cousin, Sam.  He’s a Wheaten Terrier.  He’s such a good dog.  He’s goofy and fun loving. He’s about as good as you can get in the guest dog department.

Although Sam is a great dog, we learned this week that we are definitely a one dog household.  Especially a one terrier household.  Ike and Sam get along well.  They just play and annoy each other non-stop. That’s what terriers do. My poor dirty, dirty floors.

We also realized that Ike is very cat like.  He has a litter box.  We leave food out for him to eat at his leisure.  He’s pretty much as self sufficient as a dog can get.  Sam is a dog.  Dogs have to go outside.  Dogs have regularly scheduled feedings.  Dogs are definitely more work than dog-cats.

Although it was an interesting week, there was one big benefit to having two dogs.  Double the snuggling!

Are you a one or two member pet family?  Maybe more?  Is your dog a cat?  Sounds funny but think about it.

  1. You seriously have a litter box for Ike?! Love it. We are a one dog family. I'd love a cat (because I like cats and they are suuuuuper low maintenance) but Aaron says no. sigh.

    Have a GREAT weekend!

  2. Wow- Ike is a cat-dog! We are a 3(!!!) dog family, plus 2 cats. The dogs are definitely dog-dogs, not cat-dogs. Although the cats are kind of dog-cats, in a weird way. We have a strange household. I never thought we'd have 3 dogs, but it works (although we'll NEVER have more than that!!)

  3. We are a two dog family, although I've learned my lesson, and will never own two dogs again. Sure they keep each other company, but it's always double the chore. Your house guest looks adorable, I'm sure it was fun while it lasted. And yes, one of my dogs acts very similar to a cat.

  4. Love the pics! We have two Cocker Spaniels, Newman & Ollie. Newman is a dog and Ollie would be a dog/cat! Ollie loves to sleep on the top of the recliner just like a cat would and he's constantly licking/cleaning himself like a cat!!! LOL! We've often said he's cleaner than a cat!!

  5. I had NO IDEA you could litter train a dog. Thats pretty cool... We have 2 big dogs that race around the house like maniacs until the old man passes out on the floor. I think we will always be a 2 dog household because they are just so attached to each other that we wouldn't want on to be alone, gotta have friends for the pups!

I am lazy as well and wish the litter training would work, but I am sure my husband would be highly against that, one day we will have a fence so we can just open the door and be done with them...haha

  6. So funny. I call Rocco "cat-dog"!! My mom has a Maltese (Rocco's breed) and when the two "cousins" get together, it's nonstop drool-covered commotion. These two remind me of Rocco and Peanut. I loved the Instapics :)

  8. We have a dog-dog and a cat-dog. I love haveing two of them. One is older and one is still a puppy-great company for me and even with the work involved they are easier than human babies.
    Love the pics!

  9. We have a dog-cat too. We leave food out; she comes and goes inside and out at her leisure. The other day I rushed out the door in the morning and got back home at about 2 p.m., having forgotten to let her out of the house to pee. (Oops.) Guess who has the most impressive bladder ever? MY dog. Love that dog. Did I mention she's incredibly forgiving? :)

  11. We just went up to THREE dogs here (one of them is turning 14 next month, so she probably won't be around much longer). We were supposed to only be fostering The Beagle, but it turns out we find her irresistible and had to keep her. It's funny because if you asked me what kind of dog I'd wind up next, I would have said a terrier. LOVE terriers. Didn't think I liked hounds. But dogs work in mysterious ways, I guess...anwway, super cute post!

  12. Bill is as easy as dogs get. I think we'll stick with one for now!

  13. I think Jack wins in the cat-dog category. He's such a grumpy old man, too. We are definitely a one dog family, but we love it when the doggie cousins come to visit!

  14. I love that Ike is a dog-cat because we always say that our Perny is a cat-dog!!

Btw, we only have Perny and we are keeping it that way. He gives us the love of a dog, but is totally self-sufficient like most cats. He's the best of both worlds! :)

  15. scout is a dog cat too. he likes to sit on top of couch backs like cats. he likes balls that have little bells in them, like cats too.

we are a one dog house too, as much as i love dogs, i dont know if i could do it!!

  16. You have a litter box for Ike???? OK this is something that I have GOT to learn to do. Was it hard to train him?

  17. I have a Great Dane and my boyfriend moved in with his Argentine Dogo, so although we technically are a two dog household, it's like having four. Drool covered walls, and tumbleweeds made of fur. The Dogo is definitely all dog, but the Dane is partially human.

  18. That is awesome that Ike is litter trained! What a great dog you have!

  19. We are a 2-dog household. Life was so much simpler before the 2nd pup, but we adore them both and they love each other so 2 dogs it is... :) Dog #1 is more person than dog... Dog #2 is quite catlike.

  20. I WISH our dogs were more cat-like! Ours are old and definitely dogs. How did you litter train Ike? We have 2 dogs (15 & 13) and 1 cat (18). And 2 children.

  21. Aww snuggly blanket puppies. Our cats have dog tendencies: one chews everything and the other licks us. Bizarre. Have a great weekend!

  23. Two dog household. If it were up to me we'd be a zero dog household. You know my plight.

In other news, I just wanted the Dig it post today. Although Ike is a close second.

  24. I am over here cracking up! Those pictures are SO adorable and I love Wheatens (no shedding!). I can't believe Ike uses a litter box! How convenient! Well, Rosie is definitely a dog. I am out there every day in the yard picking up poop!

  25. We have a puppycat! She's technically a dog, or so they tell us, but she has a lot of cat mannerisms. She's not really food motivated at all, although we try to give her food dish a refill at set times. She doesn't have a little box, but she rings bells to go outside. It's adorable. I think its her size that makes her so cat like - at just 5 lbs she perches on the sofa arms and swipes at things with her paw just like a cat. Luckily she loves affection, unlike most cats I know!
PS Ike is so freakin' adorable. How did you train him to use a litter box?

  26. Ike is adorable all on his own but together they are truly fantastic! (insert lots of squealing here!) We have 4 dogs (and 2 cats) at my parents house but when I am away at University I am dogless and I thought living in an apartment it would be impossible to have a dog but now with this litter thing you got me thinking . . . .
    Big Love! xxx

  27. So cute! Maybe Ike needs a brother or sister. :o) I have a dog, dog cat, and a cat. Adding the cat was tricky because my dogs like "kitty crunches". Gross! So we had to get creative and put a kitty door in a storage chest for the litter box.

  28. I bet Ike loved having a guest! I love the pic of Ike and your visitor on the coach! They are too cute:)

  29. Double the snuggling?! I really want another dog, but Kevin thinks I'm crazy!

  30. Adorable! My dog is definately a cat dog as well, no doubt about it. He's a short haired Yorkshire Terrier and only about six pounds... but he eats open dish, and cuddles on our shoulders when we watch movies. He also loves sitting in the window, or on the back of 'his chair'. He'll have a cat-door in our new house, too, so we won't have to let him outside (so that'll be fun!)
We had another dog in the house for a few weeks before, and it was okay, but it'd be best if they were raised the same way. I definately want another. :) Who needs kids when you have dogs?

  31. Ok forgive me for commenting a month after you posted. Goodness life gets so busy these days. Pause button, please?

Anyhoo, just wanted to know if you took your poor house guest for a two-for-one grooming, or if you photoshopped Ike's body onto your guest. It's crazy how similar their bodies look and how not similar their heads are!

We took care of my little old lady lab last year when my parents went away for a month. I was 7 months pregnant (and thought I was big and uncomfortable at the time, boy did I not know what was coming) and she is super needy, so having the two dogs darn near did me in. Then, on the last night she was here, shhh, don't tell 'cause this is kind of embarrassing, she had an accident on one of S's silk & wool rugs that predate me and he may love more than me. I was horrified and had to have the rug taken off to be professionally cleaned and neutralized. Oh it was so much drama. So yes, that's the long way to say that we're a one-dog house. And frankly, with a baby, having one dog and get overwhelming for me at times. Shh, don't tell Feeney that ;)
