New Living Room Rug

I did it.  I opened my new rug.  And I like it.  No more hating Overstock.  Woo hoo.

Some of you may be a bit disappointed after having read my navy rug post.  I went boring.  But hear me out.  Boring is good.  Boring is me.  I have this problem lately of wanting everything pretty that I see.  Unfortunately, I am unable to surround myself with everything pretty.  And just because it’s pretty, doesn’t mean that it fits the style of our house.  Does that make sense?

And Ike.  Ike LOVES the new rug!

I went with a jute and hemp rug from Overstock.  I decided that I wanted a neutral rug.  I like neutrals. Neutrals relax me.  A neutral rug allows me to change pillows. I like to change things. Pillows are easier/cheaper to change than rugs.  The price was right for the size.  The rug added some much needed texture to the room.  Sold.

The only thing we aren’t super happy with is the smell. To quote Nate, “It smells like a rodeo.” A day with the windows open definitely helped air it out.

The rug is jute and hemp so it’s not one that’s super soft and squishy on the feet…which may not be for everyone.  We don’t spend very much time on the floor so it’s not a concern of mine.  Ike is the only one who rolls around on the floor and he tells me it’s cool.

Are you a neutral fan or a bold color fan?  Why are rugs so stinking expensive?  Any fellow jute fans?  Can you believe that all of these Ike photos were taken without treats?  Seriously.  Me either.

  1. So...you are taking full advantage of the rodeo smell, right, and wearing your cowboy hats and doing some line dancing and cracking you-might-be-redneck-if jokes, right? Please say right.

I think it's pretty! I shy away from natural weave because of the feel but I always admire them in other peoples' homes. And if Ike and Nate both approve then it is an obvious win.

  2. Love it...I'm more of a neutral girl....I'm in the process of changing out my living room to neutral and changing the pillows is so much cheaper! Great find!

  3. it looks fabulous! natural rugs are always somewhat stinky at first- either the smell subsides or you get used to it! :)

  4. I've been waiting to see this! Looks AWESOME :)

  5. i love the look of a jute rug! the texture has always left me too nervous to purchase though, because there are a lot of bare feet around here. Does it hurt to walk on in a prickly sense? i really want to incorporate one of these into our house!

  6. I like both. This rug adds great texture to the room. I like it in there.

  7. The rug looks great.

I think we all have our safety colors, and I don't think there is anything wrong with it. I tend to gravitate towards fall colors all year round, which makes things look really heavy in the spring and summer. But I just can't help it...red and gold is pretty to me. :)

  8. Love it! I would like a new rug, too (why didn't anyone punch me when I said "oh, this white rug will look perfect in our living room"?) but it's not in the budget right now. It's fun to shop online anyway :)

  9. The jutey rug melds your furniture & room together quite nicely. (I do dislike those "natural" smells like burlap, etc. in my room -- it makes me wanna scratch my arms & legs off...)

  10. Haha. Smells like a Rodeo. That's funny. It is a beautiful rug though. I like the contrast and the textured look. Good buy.

  11. Jute and hemp? You hippies. I like it! I can understand going neutral, especially with an expensive thing like a rug.

  13. HA- smells like a rodeo. Love it. We used to have a jute rug and I think it also smelled like a rodeo for awhile but that definitely goes away. And while I agree it's not the softest material, you get used to it- and it gets softer with use. Looks great!!

  14. Oooo, I like it! Love the texture it adds. I'm too chicken to buy rugs, but I'm working on it. Apparently the key factor for me (or, more accurately, my dogs) is the washability of said rug. Certain puppies find it perfectly acceptable to race around the house with muddy paws, which tends to end poorly for rugs.

    How do you clean jute??

  15. Very nice touch of texture to your already gorgous living room. I totally know what you mean by 'liking everything that's pretty but that doesn't mean it fits your home'...I tend to do this as well. Tying everything together is the hardest part for me because I like so many different styles!

p.s. I love the big fat smile on Ike's face!

  17. Oh I LOVE it!! And I love your view on neutrals, I think I might be the same. I am trying to figure it out. Aaron has some similar rugs in his office and I love the texture it adds!

  18. Going neutral for your major pieces is totally okay! In fact, it's the smart thing to do...especially for a rug. You are right...they are just too darn expensive, and that has kept me from buying one for our living room for a longgggg time now. I just can't pull the trigger because I'm too nervous, so kudos to you for actually making the purchase!

The natural fibers are gorgeous, and since you don't mind how they feel, then who cares?!?! Because Ike surely appreciates the new rug. :)

  19. Love the first image most.
The way he looks into the camera totally makes you forget to actually look at the rug! :D

  20. I'm sure the scent will fade after use, but I definitely love it in the space! Jesse would love to have you around to balance out my love of yellow, coral, teal and purple ;)

  21. Hi! I think it looks great! I like having a neutral base so you can change things out, like you said. :) I recently got a knubby textured, natural fiber rug when Rugs USA had their big 75% off sale. It is room sized and fabulous. It smelled like earth when I opened it and for several days I could barely stand it. The other day I peeled up a corner and there is a nice layer of dusty dirt under it. OMG!! I WAS smelling dirt! Good think my vacuum works. I still love it. :)

  22. We're looking for one just like that, but I'm afraid to buy online because I'm worried they'll be scratchy. Putting this one on my bug-andy-til-he-agrees list!

  23. Michelle,I agree with you 100 percent!!! My brilliant self decided to beg and eventually get a red rug for my family room, yes it's pretty, but I am limited to those colors only, and I want to go lighter sooo badly. I will be going your route next time, and I don't think it looks boring at all, and hey, now you can scratch your feet on the rug when you get an itch ;)

  24. hmm i wondered how it would feel on your piggies. i need a soft rug so it wouldnt be for me although i loveeee the texture it brings into the room and the color.

  25. I like it a lot. Great texture. I'm all about boring too. Exciting is totally overrated.

  26. I totally agree! I find myself loving something and then realizing it just doesn't go with my house. Why buy something you end up hating right? Ike is just too cute loving that thing up!

  27. Your living room’s quite the beauty! All your furnishings are well placed and leaning towards the fire place and the TV. Great job! You really know how to create a focal point in your room while adding brightness and warmth.

  28. “The only thing we aren’t super happy with is the smell.” -- Haha! Well, new carpets usually smell eerie at first, but once you have them for quite some time, the smell will definitely go away. ;) Anyhow, your carpet looks wonderful. It’s no wonder Ike loves to stay there. Haha! I love the color you chose, as it goes well with the beige color theme of your house.
