Rug Evolution

I’m not really good at following decorating rules.  I’m just not.  I live in Iowa.  My friends think I’m famous because I write a silly blog.  Who needs decorating rules?

Like rug size.  Who cares what the “rules” are in regards to rug size?  Not this Midwest girl.   Especially not me 3 years ago.

Well, hello baby 3’x5’ rug.  You’re so tiny and cute….and totally way too small for this room.

I told myself this totally worked…because I still had $100,000 in student loans…and I knew zero about decorating.  Totally works.  Totally works.

Slowly I began to learn that at least the couches should touch the rug.  Do you know how much large rugs cost?  A lot of money.  That’s how much.  But I should upgrade.  That rug above just isn’t cutting it.  How about a 5’x8’? That will totally work.

I can’t find a view from above but as you can see, the size is better.  Pretty decent.  But still small.

One popular rule that I have found is that the rug should be large enough to slide under the front legs of sofas and chairs in a seating arrangement.  All the legs touching the rug helps unify the furniture.

I agree.  I also agree that the “rule” depends on your room.  The “all front legs touching” thing may not work for every room situation.  Rules. Schmules.

I also think I need to scoot the chair closer.  Thanks view from the walkway.

Now I think I need a round coffee table to balance out all of that square.  I should research coffee table rules.  Or stop learning decorating things.  The latter would probably make my husband happy.

Do you follow decorating “rules”?  Are you currently breaking any decorating “rules”?

  2. A big round tray on the table could get your shape on. You could even put an over-sized roundish basket for magazines beside the chair...

  3. I don't only read this blog for the humor and cute doggie pictures - I learn stuff too! I've been looking for rugs for the living and dining rooms and size has been a hang up for me! Good to know. :)

  4. I like how the rug gives you another shade of neutral. I think that just about everyone has broken the rules once in a while. When my husband and I first got together, we had faux leather couches in dark green, a dining table with 4 different color chairs (on purpose) and a multi colored fan....awesome stuff let e tell you!

  5. Rules are meant to be broken!! :) I don't follow many rules in decorating, but it's probably because I don't know what they are haha. I'm not the best at the whole decor thing, and I'm okay with that! I'm a total rookie!

  6. It's so hard to keep up with those rules. I say do whatever you like (although I do think that a round table would be awesome)! Maybe your hubby will build you one...

  7. I know nothing about decorating so I just "decorate" it as I see fit. No rules for me. I love your living room...it looks so cozy and nice! Your dog is cute too :)

  8. Rug size can be hard to get right, or it is for me anyways. I've been looking for one for our dining room lately. I know that it should be large enough so that when all the chairs are pulled out they are still on the rug. My issue with that is that the rug looks ginormous when the chairs are pushed in. I just might have to break the rules on this one!

  9. The closest thing I've ever gotten to learning design rules was during a flower arrangement course in college. aka clueless......

  10. darn those pesky rules. I'm a rule breaker, but only because I am clueless!

  11. rules are made to be broken, but I do agree that the bigger rug looks great! What about a round bowl or something on the coffee table for now to soften the edges? Something really chunky with a lot of presence.

  12. You are right! Rules, schmules! It's your house, do what you want!

I do think the round coffee table would be awesome though!

  13. Great post. I actually bought a rug for my kids playroom knowing it would be too small.. but I just LOVED it. I still love it. So to make it look better I have all the furniture clustered on it, so they would touch it. It is almost comical. :) Not sure which looks worse though... bad furniture placement on an correctly sized rug, or the right furniture placement and an undersized rug!

  14. I follow them when the are convenient and fit with my budget.....which I think means I only do it when I want to.

  15. Ha. I don't follow any currently! I have plywood floors, rugs too big, rugs too small and rugs too ugly in most rooms! Your new rug looks fantastic!

  16. Round table! Round table! Round table!

The rug rule I've always heard is either all the furniture should be on the rug, or all of it should be off the rug. But I could be making up that last part because my current rug situation sucks.

  17. Yes, yes, a round table. I'm probably breaking a lot of decorating rules. But I'm a rebel.

  18. rules schmules. i'm not sure what rules i'm breaking, but i'm sure there are a lot. some that come to mind are holes in our ceilings, green carpet (is that not IN right now?), tvs front and center....just a start ;). I love the rug, seriously love it.

  19. I don't know any of the decorating rules, so I'm probably breaking all of them unknowingly. And that could explain a lot!! That being said, a round coffee table could be awesome.

  20. Who makes these rules?
I hung some curtain rods this weekend (above the woodwork and wide) and my husband freaked out saying they look dumb so high. I told him that's where they are supposed to go, and of course his response is 'says who?' good question dear, good question. Lol
On that note, whoever made the rug rule must have been right because yours looks great ;)

  21. Ooh, I love that rug.

I don't know the rules, but I can tell what looks ok, what looks good, and what looks even better. I know that a lot of the stuff goin' on in my house right now looks 'ok'. But um... following the 'rules' in order to get to the 'even better' stage? It's kind of expensive! As long as I can pull off 'ok' and not look like a completely ill-informed schmuck on the Internet, I'm happy.

(I know I have no always been successful...)

  22. It's good to have at least the front legs of the furniture on the rug because helps prevent some people (OK, me) from tripping on the edge of the rug all the time.

That's probably the only rule I agree with.

  23. Um. Anonymous? You are insane. If you are boycotting women, why comment on a woman's blog.

Love the rig. I agree that it fits the space well. And you are totally famous.
