Deck the Living Room

Let’s end the week with the last part of our holiday house tour!  (Check out our dining room and mudroom if you missed them!)

Our living room is looking might festive.  Don’t you think?

I think there is a fine line between decorating for Christmas and your house throwing up Christmas.  I don’t know that throwing up is wrong.  It’s just a fine line.  Both Nate and I dislike clutter so we try to keep the Christmas items to a minimum…but we still want the house to feel cozy and festive.  Make sense?

Our tree is artificial.  We’re too lazy and cheap for a real one.  This tree is 12 feet tall.  We both wanted a giant tree for our two story living room.  We bought this during an after Christmas sale.  It’s not pre-lit.  Way to go cheap selves.  I cringe every time Nate stands on his tip toes on a ladder to add the star.  If it was up to me, only the bottom third of this tree would be lit.  I’m glad Nate isn’t afraid of heights!

You will also notice the lack of presents under the tree.  We like to decorate early but shop a little later.  It’s good to spread out the holiday to-do list.

Here are a few other holiday views of our first floor.  I can only wish that the sun will shine again someday here in Iowa so we could have some well lit pictures!

Is your house all decked out?  Does it throw up Christmas or do you not have nearly enough decorations?

Check back Sunday night for a DIY holiday project.  And next week is my one year blogiversary.  Big stuff!

  3. What a great looking tree! I can't imagine trying to decorate a 12' tree... I cringe just having to stand on a chair to put a couple of ornaments on the top of ours :)

  5. I.....fail at Christmas decorating. Our tree is now up, and has lights on it, but no ornaments. I'm afraid there's really not going to be much happening in the way of decorations this year, since it's all torn apart and covered in dry wall dust. We almost didn't even get a tree, but I just couldn't be that scrooge-like.

I love that you have a giant tree. That makes me happy. I also love that your decorating is subtle and tasteful. If you want to come decorate my house I'd be pretty happy about that.

  6. Your decorating is just lovely, I like simple as well and as for the tree at least you have yours up....we haven't picked out our tree yet.

  7. Daaaaaaang, that's a giant tree!

And my house, definitely projectile vomits Christmas.

  8. Holy balls that is a big tree! You did an awesome job as usual - obviously Christmas time but it's not punching you in the face. Also, don't think we ususally get photos from these angles - still drooling over the new lights in the kitchen!

  9. I have a poinsettia... And that's it...

Oh, my dogs have Christmas collars too though, Koira has candy canes and Pallo has gingerbread men.

That is pretty much the limit on Christmas in my tiny apartment.

  10. Beautiful tree! We have a live tree and it looks, well, live...all crooked and leaning into our window. I think we'll have to check out some of those after Christmas sales for an artificial one. Good tip to get one that's prelit :)

  11. Your place is looking great. It's the perfect amount of "Christmas".

  12. I love it, that massive tree is awesome! I'm sure you saw the shot of ours from last year. Giant and ridiculous, just the way I like it. I agree as well, decor in moderation is definitely the way to go. My biggest reason for that, is that I hate putting away all the seasonal stuff after Christmas is over! So less is more : ) Its looks great!

  13. Love it! I need to tone mine down a bit sometimes. Less it definitely more. What color green did you use in your kitchen? I love it!

  14. BEAUTIFUL!!
My house if it was up to me, would throw up Christmas, bu hubby is there to calm things down.....
Was going to go get the tree this morning but it started to snow...maybe tomorrow.

  15. If I had unlimited budget, my house would be puking and hemorrhaging Christmas from every orifice. That's disgusting, but true. Yours is very tasteful, and I actually for real gawked when I saw the size of that tree. You are braver than I am.

  16. Your house looks fabulous. And clean. Which is something my house desperately needs. So you can come over anytime, since you are obviously so good at it.

As for the tree, I'm totally shocked it isn't pre-lit. That is a lot of height to light. I need to buy a taller tree this year, ours looks dwarfed.

Did you make the stockings? Super cute!

  17. I'd be scared of that tree too. Love the super tall height though.Your house is immaculate. Mine totally barfs Christmas! Silver, cream & gold glittery barf everywhere!! LOL!

  18. Wow! The decorations are the perfect amount and the tree is stunning. And well, the house is simply spectacular. Nice, very nice.

  19. I like the height of your tree, go big or go home! I also enjoyed the new perspective of your living room and kitchen together (and the sexy new lights ;))

  20. Your house looks adorable! I love all the decorations - especially that snowflake pillow and the deer on the mantel. Oh and that gigantic treee!!! Amazing! :)

  21. Our first real tree (we had an artificial one until now) is 9 feet tall...and it fell over yesterday. Fun stuff. I think I said "This is so not worth it" at least three times in the 2 hours it took to get everything re-straightened. So, I admire you and your 12' artificial tree. Your house looks so cozy--just the right amount of Christmas! :)

  22. Holy cow! I love your tree :) I once decorated a 16' not pre-lit tree and that was a DEFINITE pain in the toosh. I feel you!

  23. Your house looks amazing, perfect in every detail.

  24. Beautiful! I'm not much into Christmas or Christmas decorations, but looking at your house makes me jealous!

  25. So, so, so pretty. The whole darn thing.

  26. Love the decor! My hubby saw your pictures and said "hey! their house layout looks like ours...but way cooler!"

  27. Love the apparently greenish hue on some of the walls. I would love to do that here, but since downsizing to a condo my hubby still is reluctant! I have a similar fire on my tv! ha!

  28. Love your blog (just found it!). What color is your living room/dining room painted? It's beautiful.

  29. Love the "throw up Christmas" term! You have some beautiful subtle touches of Christmas without being over the top.

    Thanks for sharing.

We don't put the presents under our tree until Christmas Eve - my 7 year old would be too tempted to open ALL the presents!

Merry Christmas to you and yours from Ireland.

  30. Love your decorations! Is looks beautiful and that is one amazing tree! We went with tiny this year :)

  31. Your home is beautiful! I love the Christmas touches... it really does look cozy and festive! That tree is amazing. We also have an artificial, but thankfully it is pre-lit. I can not imagine putting lights on a 12 footer! We are your neighbors to the west (Nebraska) and have not have much sun lately either. :)

  32. I am working my way through a bunch of posts today as I have been busy and not had time to read..I can see I have missed some very interesting ones here..the tree is magnificent and works beautifully in size. Love the festive decor.
