Spanish Tile Front Door

Remember when Nate’s sister was debating on what color to paint her front door?  (If not, read about it here)…

2011-06-08_18.40.02
Well, she went with the popular vote of a darker red and it’s quite pretty…

2011-06-30_14.58.39
She chose Valspar’s Spanish Tile.  It took 5 coats and she tells me it could probably use another.  She never wants to paint a door red again….but it’s just so darn pretty and inviting…says the sister-in-law that wasn’t involved in the painting process…

Moral of this red door painting story: Use a tinted primer when painting white door with red paint…or hire it done….

Who has a painting horror story to share?  Anyone inspired to paint their front door?

**One of Nate’s fireworks photos is featured on Pioneer Woman…check it out here!  Love her site!**

  1. I think the door makes her house seem "finished". Tell her it was worth the hassle, looks great!

  2. I don't think the tinted primer would have made a difference really. I think it still would have needed a lot of coats. I think the Valspar paint was too thin, also. I really want to paint my shutters now, but the prospect of 5 more coats of red has me rethinking :oP Maybe if I'm ambitious when it gets cooler out...

  3. Oh I know too well! My husband painted our door (which was nasty green) white but didn't sand...at all. Then I get the cry for help but it was too late. I would like to buy a new one some day since there are two botched paint jobs worth of paint, bubbles and ripples on the thing. Somethings I'm okay with not DIY-ing...

  4. She didn't use tinted primer? I've found it really does make a huge difference, esp. with red. I've done two red doors and a red wall and it's about the worst color ever.

It looks really nice though. And I want those blue hydrangeas at my house.

  6. I painted our door red from white a couple of months ago. Using the same paint that we used for our living room, a Valspar color color-matched to behr paint and also the gray tinted prime I only did a total of three coats. The gray primer makes a huge difference! Without it our paint would have looked pink.

  15. Hello! I know this is kind of off topic but I was wondering which blog platform are you using for this website?

I'm getting sick and tired of Wordpress because I've had
issues with hackers and I'm looking at options for another platform. I would be great if you could point me in the direction of a good platform.
