A Stroll Down Memory Lane- Staircase

Let’s take another stroll down memory lane and check out where we were on our house building process 3 years ago…

3 Years Ago This Week:

Our house started to look like a house!

Do you like our plywood shoved in the patio door area to help meet code?  Classy.  And looking at the ladder up 3 stories is giving me a panic attack…I, obviously, was not involved in the roofing process.

Ike and I were enjoying the view out the guest room window.  He definitely loved going to check out the house progress…

The circular staircase was built…

I was so in love with these stairs (still am).  If they had cheeks, I would have squeezed them.

When designing our house, I wanted it to have some unique architectural elements..no cookie cutter contractor house here.  The problem with “unique” is that “unique” usually means expensive…which we really didn’t have the budget for.  These stairs were definitely more expensive than a traditional staircase but they were worth every penny. I just had to do away with my secret passage that I wanted to add.  Darn it…but seriously, how cool would a secret passage be?  I’m still trying to figure out how to add one now….

There you have it.  Our house 3 years ago this week!

And just for fun, if money was no object what “unique” thing would you add to your house?  Along with a secret passage, I think a slide would be pretty sweet.  And how about an indoor pool just for fun?!

  2. Hi!
Your house is wonderfull, and huge! I love it!
Here, in Argentina, we built our house with bricks and cement, and I always wondered why did you use this kind of material (I don´t know its name. Durlock maybe?). If someone is able to explain me, I would be very gratefull!

    Thank you!

PS: Love your dog. I had one when I was a kid :)
PS2: I´m so sorry for my english!

  3. I love how you have such unique features in your home. Like you said, they can be hard to come by in new construction. The staircase is beautiful and worth every penny!
Ike is so cute! Don't you think our dogs would have such fun playdates?

  4. Haha yeah, I think that's Beiber's head on the top for me. I don't really know any of the current celebs are though, so who knows.

I LOVE your stairs! I don't know if it counts as unique, but I'd like to add a garage with an art studio above it. And maybe it would have a wet-room style bathroom and a kitchenette, so it could kind of function as a guest house, too. We also want a half bath off the living room/patio (it would have two doors).

  5. i love your stairs!! what i would add is many more uniquely shaped windows...a wall of windows to make it a bit more contemporary in one room, maybe a circular window in our bathroom...and definitely a bay window with seat in the bedroom!

windows might be boring, but that's always what i admire in other people's houses!

  6. Can you write a post about the process/decision to build your own home? The pros & cons? Your involvement, etc.? How did you select the builder, subcontractors, etc.?

I have a vacant piece of land I have been wanting to build a house on (rental property)...but have been a bit nervous about how to start the process.

  7. Good luck with the Beiber situation!

If money were no object, I think I'd have a two-story library with curved corners (no 90 degree angles here!), and a rolling ladder that would roll 360 degrees around the room. WAIT! One wall would be all windows. Final answer =)

  8. If money were no object then my two story living room would have a treehouse in the top of one of the corners. Maybe something like this?

Or just a "fort room" up there where I would extend the upstairs walkway to reach it. There is a window in that corner so it would make a lovely mommy hiding spot where I could still see what the kids were doing in most of the rest of the house.

  9. I definitely love the 'unique' staircase! It's pretty dramatic in its own way. It's been years since you built the house. I hope everything is well-maintained and in good condition. Please update the blog with some photos of your house today. I'd like to see it. And, I love the idea of a slide and an indoor pool. Did you pursue it? :)
