Under Cabinet Lighting

Nate and I actually completed a few house projects this week-end.  What the what?  Weird. I know.

Nate had been casually looking for lighting for under our kitchen cabinets.  We gave no thought to under cabinet lighting when we were building.  Things can get a little dark at night while cooking/baking.  House building fail.

030

Luckily there are many options for wireless lighting.  We choose this…

003

We purchased two sets.  They were $35 per set at Sam’s.  (I detest shopping at Sam’s but Nate likes it.  Sam’s always ends in me needing anger management courses.)  They were a one time buy so we bit the bullet and purchased them.

The lighting is wireless and has a remote switch.  You can hook multiple sets up to one switch.  We wanted a switch because we are lazy.  We will be more likely to use the lights if it’s one easy switch versus turning on multiple lights.

The installation was easy.  Each set came with 2 light bars, some adhesive strips (like the 3M strip), screws, and a remote switch.  We chose to use the adhesive strips over the screws.  We may regret this decision when we need to change the batteries.  (We thought of this about 3/4 through the installation.)

012

We inserted the batteries and applied the adhesive strips to the ends. Nate found the middle of the underside of the cabinets and stuck the bar firmly in place.

014

Ike supervised from his favorite position in the living room…

017

15 minutes later, we had under cabinet lighting.

019

Lighting controlled by a fancy remote switch that is hidden away but still easy to access.

124

Pretty during the day…

028

And in the evening…

Any thoughts on under cabinet lighting?  Any fellow Sam’s Club haters?  Any other lazy people that need remotes for everything?

  1. We have under the cabinet lighting. Our kitchen is pretty dark do it's kind of a necessity with my late night cookie-making habit. I want new lights though. Ours cast the ugliest orangy yellow light (ruining all my blog food pics and making me a slave to pic monkey to correct that). Plus they're old. Yours look all high tech. Perhaps this will be an upcoming project for Rocco & me to undertake.

  2. Love it! And I love your supervisor! My neighbor just had the whole kitchen rewired for undercabinet lighting. It was quite a project. I like your easy fix so much better! I might try this since our kitchen doesn't have the best lighting! Have a great week!

  3. Nice! We were looking at under cabinet lighting at Ikea on Friday. It's something we'll definitely do after we paint our kitchen cabinets. I don't mind Sam's Club, but I tend to avoid shopping crowds so I go on weekdays. Sometimes I run into the geriatric crowd, but I can't get too upset with them.

  4. Looks awesome!! Good job. I LOVE shopping at Costco. Its hard to stay on my list and not impulse buy. I'm with Chelsea - I hardly ever shop there on weekends - way too busy.

  5. I can't believe how well those work! We have old under cabinet lights that came with the house when we bought it. They also came with ugly thick yellow cords. I may have break my vow stating to never visit a Sam's again...

  6. Those look great! I'm totally going with under cabinet lighting when we renovate. Our kitchen gets super dark when the sun goes down. I might consider this option in the meantime.

  7. Wow! Those look amazing! I didn't even know something like that existed! I will probably have to brave Sam's to pick some up. :)

  8. Never would have thought to look at Sam's for under cabinet lights. Go figure!
I'm more of a Costco shopper - you know, where you can buy food, plan your vacation, get a mortgage and look at coffins all under the same roof ;)

Anyways, these look great! I love that they come with a wireless switch - that's the thing that's always bugged me about the sets I've seen, having to turn each one on individually.

By the way, your kitchen looks very similar to the one my mom had in the house I grew up in so I get all warm-fuzzy when you post pictures of it. <3

  9. wow- it looks awesome! and who knew sam's had it! well, duh- you.

  10. I totally should've gone that route. We bought the ones that come with a zillion cords, so we have the lights installed but haven't figured out how to hide the cord-mess yet. Yours look awesome!

  11. That's very cool! I love that it has a switch! We dont have under cabinet lights either, but we've been talking a lot about finding a good solution.

  12. Under cabinet lighting is a must now for any kitchen I have! I must check out this wireless option, too. I'm always late to the party on these things! Thanks for sharing - it really is the little things in life isn't it?

  13. ditto - great job, didn't know they had remotes now. As to Sam's -- hate as well. I despise how they act like you are a shoplifter and check your merch at the door (10 steps from where you just checked out and in full view of security cameras -- what are you going to slip in your cart in the meantime?!) -- I changed to Costco, now they do the same --- totally frosts me!

  14. Very snazzy! I've never been to Sam's Club (I'm more of a Costco girl) but I totally know why you hate it, although I tend to be more annoyed with the shoppers than the store itself.

  15. This is great and I'd love to see an update on how long the batteries last. Will it be more expensive than wiring in the long run because batteries are expensive, or because they are LED, will they last a long time? Curious to see.

Sams, ugh, I have a love/hate relationship with it too...

  16. I love your new undercabinet lights, so pretty!

We have some old, florescent lights that make a horrible buzzing sound when turned on like they're waiting to zap a bazillion mosquitoes! Hence I never turn them on...I really gotta talk hubby into alternatives on how to fix it as I love the soft glow of undercabinet lighting in the evening.

  17. Nice! I've always loved how they look at night. We do own some, but they are still in the package. I assume some day I'll get to actually us them, but I won't be holding my breath in the mean time.

  18. i dunno about sams club (we're a costco family -- mmm costco-size samples!) but a wireless switch w/battery operated lights?? best.idea.ever. Thanks for letting me know these exist ;-)

  19. i have never seen wireless ones! i love them...we had messy wired ones in the last house and we ripped them out because they were so obnoxious. these, i could totally fall in love with. As for Sam's Club, never been in one, we are a Costco family and we love it. Plus, the busiest time is when all the cooking demos are, so free snacks everywhere....who doesn't love trying pieces of pizza, chips, cookies, smoothies, etc while shopping?!

  20. Those lights look great! I dont know if we NEED them in our kitchen, but I'd love to have them for some ambiance at night :)

    ReplyDelete
  21. Ohh, moving into a new house in a few weeks and we may need these. Good to know that they make them wireless and battery operated. Loving the Ike man on the couch, best supervisor.

  22. Looks great! We put in similar lights as well as track lighting last year. Our kitchen used to be so dark.

  23. This looks great! My dad just put in under-cabinet lighting and I HATE it! He aparently didn't look into his options too much so he got a kind that plugs in...now he has all these wires hanging down to his outlets - ew!
I like your way much better :)

  24. Wow that was quick and easy (judging by the time it took to read about the project.) Looks great!

  25. Oooh nice mood lighting. Our kitchen ceiling is like 10 ft. tall and we are in desperate need of lighting that is closer to the food I attempt to cook. My skills suffer even when my workspace is NOT under-lit.

  26. I like the under cabinet lighting at night when you don't want the flood lights aka canister lights on making your home look like walmart. Way to complete a project this weekend, nice and easy yet so fulfilling. ;) Oh and Yes Sams Club also makes me angry but usually it is in the parking lot. It must be bad if my 11 year old commented on it.

  30. If the strips don't want to hold after you replace the batteries replace them with velcro -- no problem reattaching

    ReplyDelete
  31. Thank you soooo much for posting this - it is a great idea and we bought one "test strip" at Wal Mart today. Super easy and we love having the remote switch!

    ReplyDelete
  32. Lovely! I'm surprised at how much light they actually give off!

    ReplyDelete
  33. They look great. I did go to Sams club website and read reviews. People were complaining that the batteries die super fast. Because the remote is always communicating with the lights. Have you had that problem?

    ReplyDelete
  34. Wondering the same thing. I want to buy but am leary about the battery usage. Please post comment

what if you added a little information? I ain't saying your content is not good., but what if you added a headline that makes people want more? I mean "Under Cabinet Lighting" is a little boring. You should glance at Yahoo's front page and note how they create
news titles to get viewers to click. You might add
a video or a picture or two to grab people interested about what you've got to say. Just my opinion, it would make your posts a little bit more interesting.
