Hawkeye Inspired Pennant Baby Quilt

So, I was at a beer tasting the other night.  Because that’s what grown-ups do.

I was talking to a nice girl that I had just met.  The conversation was going great until I got the dreaded “Do you have kids?” question.  Well, it’s not really the question that is dreaded.  It’s the response.  Which is “Oh.” followed by looking away in pity/awkwardness/horror that an almost 32 year old woman doesn’t have kids.  The conversation then ends because I clearly can not be your friend because I can’t join you for play dates.

My dog is fun.  Darn it.

Sorry for my rant.  Here’s a pretty Hawkeye inspired pennant baby quilt that I made for a dear friend.  My dear friend that lived across the hall from me sophomore year at the University of Northern Iowa.  My friend that I watched every episode of the Bachelor with.  My Euchre partner that helped me beat all of the boys in their floor tournament.  This quilt is for her 3rd baby.  STOP IT TIME!

Hawkeye Pennant Quilt

My friend is a big fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes.  She is also not finding out the sex of the baby.  I decided to go with the black and gold color scheme.  I like that it is themed but still classy.  Black and gold are great gender neutral colors without being too “baby”.

I am madly in love with quilt.  I want to make one for myself.  I love how the bunting lines pucker in the wash.  I also love how the pennants fray a little giving it a vintage feel.

I swear this isn’t a shameless plus (well, it didn’t start that way) but if you are looking for a custom pennant quilt of your own, head on over to Sew Midwestern and Kim {NewlyWoodwards} and I will get to quilting.  Unless you want Cyclone colors.  I might have issues with that.  (I kid. I kid. Sort of. It would just hurt a lot.)

Now if only this quilt would help our football team this year.  A girl can dream.

Who wants to be Ike’s play date?  Who wants a baby only as need for a cute Hawkeye quilt?  Me neither.  Go Hawks!

  6. I LOVE THIS QUILT!!! I'll still be friends with you Michelle. If we lived closer together I would hang out for kidless girl nights. :-)

  7. Awesome quilt! The colors are great--perfect for a gender-unknown baby. Hey, no reason you can't make little quilts for Ike, right? He'd totally appreciate it.

  8. Hi Michele, I love Ike and would happily join him in a play date. My husband and I have been married almost 18 years and we've chosen to not have kids. We have 3 cats!! Don't let it bother you!! I knew from a very young age that I didn't want children and was lucky to find a guy who felt the same!! We no longer get asked " when" and no longer get the pity looks. It will pass!!

  9. And, truth be told, I kind of miss the majority of my friends NOT having kids. It's so hard to plan anything, and when you get together, all anyone wants to talk about is their babies' eating/sleeping/pooping schedules, and it gets a little tiring. You are a hot commodity!

  10. Adorable!!! I would love to have this gifted to me. :)

  11. LOL. On almost a daily basis I get the kid question and the looks of horror. We are perfectly happy with our four legged furry monster too! :)

  12. Yea... I get that question too. Although I usually answer nope, just a spoiled dog! Which at least helps the conversation transition past the awkward stage because they feel obligated to ask what kind of dog it is. I also think it helps that in the DC area it's much more common not to have kids until well into your 30s.

Love that quilt btw! Although I'm pretty sure you're allowed to have those even without babies. And Penelope would totally want a play date with Ike!

  13. Be almost 40, single, and kidless. I get all the questions. But - my Miley would love to play with Ike. I think she is crushing on him - in secret. ;) Love the bunting quilts. What size do you make them?

  14. Dude, your life would be 10 times harder if you lived in Utah and didn't have kids. Don't worry about it. Dogs are kids. It's true. Indy and Buster will be his play date. We can have google+ hangouts for them lol. And I love that quilt. You are uber talented

  15. I can sympathize. I'm 30 and my husband and I have been married for 2 years now, so I get that question and that look ALL the time. To make matters worse, I've even had a friend give me the dire warning that if I don't hurry up and pop one out, when I change my mind and do want to have kids, I'll probably have Down Syndrome babies. How horrible is that?! I have never wanted to have children and have always been quite clear about it, so the condescending "you'll change your mind" is super aggravating too.

My cats wouldn't really enjoy a playdate with Ike, but I'd totally hang out with you and convince you to teach me how to sew a quilt. I do costuming and can make my own curtains and etc, but I've never tackled a quilt. And clearly you're a pro because that one is beautiful.

  16. I hear ya...I get the baby questions all. the. time.

And that quilt is the bee's knees. Yup, I just used a phrase a 90 year old would. Awesome.

  17. sometimes i only want a baby so i can dress it up cute for halloween. like a lion, or a chubby little mouse. but then i remember scout looks darn cute in his jaildog outfit every year, and I don't have change his diaper.

what a good idea to make the pennants hawkeye colors as a little nod to your friendship and favorite team without screaming it! love it.

  18. I guess I am a horrible parent. I have two kids, but I don't think I've ever asked a new acquaintance if they have children. Most likely it's because I truthfully don't care when I've just met them. And that's what makes me socially awkward....

  19. Haha, I love you so much I COULD HUG YOU. I always answer it with "Just two dogs, that's all I can handle!" and then people are genuinely concerned for my well being. Also, that answer is 125% true, so that gives people something legitimate to worry about.

Anyway. I absolutely love that quilt and the colors and I probably need one I just need to figure out why. Shalai probably needs it. Shalai would also love a playdate.

  20. Michelle, I am absolutely IN LOVE with your blog!! I came across it a few days ago and I'm absolutely addicted! You are just too funny and creative and I love it. It doesn't help that Ike is so darn cute and I am pining for a ("hypoallergenic") furry friend! You make me see all the great possibilities right here in my little apartment- and even compel me to sew (I just don't get along with sewing machines...) with adorable quilts like this! Basically I think you are amazing. Good on you!

  21. LOOK AT HOW GOOD THIS LOOKS! You are speedy Gonzales. How did the binding go?

  22. My sister-in-law just gave me almost the same complaint the other day and I agree that the "kids" question is the worst. Adore the blanket though! Too cute!

  23. That quilt is adorable! Makes me want to get knocked up so I can buy one, except not really. ;)

  24. I've been married ONE MONTH and people are already asking when we're having kids... um could you give us a year? or 10? because we have a dog, cats, and a sweet life. with very limited responsibility. and it is excellent.

also, that quilt is super cute. I love the pennant look. :)

  25. Zeke would totally be up for a play date with Ike! We live in Cincy, but that's just a minor detail. Great job on the quilt! We're in the same boat with the baby question. At this point family has given up on me popping one out any time soon but co-workers and strangers...oh man, the disappointment in their eyes. I care for about 2.5 seconds then remember I can spend my time and money exactly how I please for now.

  26. Don't let the questions bother you. I'm almost 37, no human kids, 3 pets, not married but living with my boyfriend for 15 years. We get the marriage and kids questions all the time. We're rebels I tell ya! I absolutely love the quilt. Will you teach me how to sew like that? :o)

  27. It is a gorgeous quilt! You are a good friend. And a darn fine human even if you haven't made any little humans. Idiots.

  28. I am loving the quilts you've been whipping out. This one is soooo cute with the polk-a-dots. Your friend is very lucky!

  29. 1. I love this quilt.
    2. I like going out with my friends without kids better than with the ones that do!!! I need a break from discussing teething.
    3. Ike is half human. Insta-Ike is the highlight of my feed lol

  30. Oh my gosh we can completely relate to those questions, and get them all the time. Two super-sized puppies are enough for us right now. Look at the bright side, no childcare costs means more money for house projects and awesome quilts. =)
