DIY Outdoor Patio Table

How was your weekend?  Nate and I were busy kids.  That’s what the old dude at the hardware store called us anyways. I’m going with it.

We put the finishing touches on our outdoor patio table that Nate built last weekend.  We enlisted the help of Nate’s parents to help us carry it from the garage.  Our patio now has a table and my car can go back in the garage. Double win.

This patio has been neglected for the 4 years that we have lived in the house.  We were holding off until we figured out how we wanted to use the space.  We are also cheap.  We aren’t done with the patio yet but we now have a good start.  We’ll probably finish the rest in another four years.  We don’t want to rush things.

Nate and I both liked this table.  Unfortunately $2000 wasn’t exactly in our outdoor budget range.  Or our indoor budget range for that matter. We were having a hard time shelling out hundreds of dollars (let alone thousands) for furniture that would end up eventually being covered in bird poo and insect guts.

Nate thought he could build a similar table.  I said go for it.  $150 and a few hours later, we had ourselves an outdoor table.

I found the outdoor chairs for $8/chair at a local antique store.  $220 isn’t exactly pocket change but we’re happy with it beings that we have a heavy/sturdy outdoor table with seating for eight.

Ike hasn’t been down to check out the table but he appeared to approve from his perch in the living room.

Outdoor Table-6

We’ll be back on Wednesday with a tutorial on how to make the table.  In the mean time, I have to continue to make the neighbors question why I’m setting a table for a fake dinner party outside.  We were actually going to use this setup yesterday until the gnats carried me back into the house.  You think I’m joking.  They are that bad.  Guess they dig the new outdoor table too.

  2. Were your ears ringing at all these past couple of weekends? We made a Patio table too last weekend. Although your scored big with those chairs, I was not as lucky so this weekend was a continuation of 'building' {benches} for our new table.

I love it. I love the dark stain too. A little time and some elbow grease totally beats paying 2K for a table!

  3. It's beautiful! I love the stain you went with better than the DWR one.

  4. Looks awesome. Substantial legs, very nice. Looks heavy! Maybe you can whip up a cover for it to keep off the dead gnats and bird poo.

  15. Beautiful! I love how it came out! When you post the tutorial, please make sure to include how good or bad it will turn out if you have a corner-cutting, shortcut-taking husband who will try every sneaky trick he can think of to make it only take like 30 minutes to pull together ;-)

  16. I love it! It's gorgeous! And I'm super jealous of your chairs! I want some like that! I've been trying to convince Jesse to build a table for our patio, but he wants to buy one at the end of summer when they're on sale. Lame.

  17. SERIOUSLY AMAZING AND I'M YELLING AS A RESULT. Your hubby needs an award for furniture building. I love this so very much and want to recreate it at our next house.

As an aside, I love how the chairs cleaned up. I didn't realize that you bought 8 - I was thinking four. What a wonderful area for a dinner party. Did you seriously have 8 people over last night? My invite? Lost in the mail?

In other news, the gnats. HATE THEM. They are such a pain. I also have a fly infestation in my house.

  18. That's one substantial table.
But seriously, now I need plans, because that would be perfect for the cabin we haven't built.

  19. Ah! Can this be any more awesome?! No. The answer is no. Can I send Mr. FSL to Iowa for a few weeks for carpentry bootcamp with Nate? You can show me how to keep a neat and clean kitchen? I'll pay you :P

  24. This is as beautiful as Kate Middleton. I love it so good. I'm excited for the tut. I was just looking at ballard design catalog at their outdoor furniture. And I was like, FREAKING OUT at how expensive their outdoor couch was. And Aaron, Matt and Karl were like "cool." And I was like "HOW DO YOU NOT UNDERSTAND HOW RIDICULOUS THIS IS! IT IS AN OUTSIDE COUCH FOR THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS AND IT WILL GET RAINED ON!" And they were like, "kenz. get over it." And then the next day, I found my catalog in the trash can.

  30. I love it - and will eagerly await the tutorial! I often wonder what my neighbors must think when I'm doing similar things such as staging something outdoors for absolutely no one, then taking a million photos of it :)

  35. I was looking to get a backyard patio set at my house. I wanted a company that was affordable, but would also do a really great job. A friend of mine suggested that i check out EP Henry at Roxbury. I was very impressed with the work they did. Were able to have great parties outside all summer. Thanks for posting.
