Thrift Shop Challenge

Yesterday I mentioned my concern with the blog becoming too serious.  And then I announced a Hey Girl Link Party.

Today Young House Love is hosting a Thrift Shop Challenge based on the Macklemore and Ryan Lewis Song called Thrift Shop (I highly suggest clicking the link to watch the clean version of the video.).

I couldn’t pass up this challenge because 1. I love thrift shops.  I stop at the Salvation Army at least once a week.  At least.  2. I recently have a love of awful rap/hip hop/Today’s hits.  I think I’m going through some sort of mid-life crisis.  (I think it’s stemming from people calling me a “lady” on Pinterest pins.  Ladies are old.  Don’t call me a lady!  I’m only 30, yo.)

Step #1: Go to a thrift shop with – just as the chorus of the song says – “$20 in your pocket” and take a picture.

Do I get bonus points for including Jesus?  And I have never have cash.  Don’t mug me because all you will get is credit cards and lip gloss.

Step #2. Spend that $20 any way you’d like and photograph your spoils.

What does $20 get you at a thrift store in Iowa? The Salvation Army in town has a new manager and they’ve decided to price furniture at ridiculous prices.  I’ve noticed that the prices have started to come back down to reasonable levels in the past couple of weeks.  The house ware items and clothes are still pretty reasonably priced.

  • $2 Pyrex
  • $3 plaid blanket

  • $0.90 mittens
  • All of the shirts were $2 or under
    • A couple were shirts with the Target tags still on them.
  • $3.00 Target cow creamer
  • $5.00 pajamas (more info below)

Step #3. Find one item (or more) referenced in the song and snap a pic.

This one is a stretch because I didn’t have time to look for an actual challenge item this week because of lovely recent snow storm.  (I’m moving South.)

But I am going to claim this as R. Kelly’s sheets. (“Probably shoulda washed this, smells like R. Kelly's sheets.”)  I’m sure Mr. Kelly would totally use a lovely vintage floral sheet and I’m sure this sheet probably smelled like the referenced R. Kelly’s sheet.  (All of my Salvation Army items get a triple wash.  Seriously.)  And it was only 99 cents.  Seriously.

I'll take those flannel zebra jammies, second-hand”.  So they aren’t quite zebra and they aren’t quite second-hand but I did get this flannel pajama set (with the Target tags still on them) for $5.  Totally popped some tabs.

There you have it.  Thrift Shop challenge complete.  Off to take your grandma’s style…

Did you partake in the challenge?  What’s your favorite thrift store purchase?

  1. I was DEFINITELY on board with this challenge too! I didn't spend the full $20, but I did get some cute deer.

Oh, and I am definitely in on the Hey Girl linky party too! SO excited.

  2. Oh man, I wish I had seen this challenge. Im a thrift store fiend! Your finds are great. My sally store puts unreasonable prices on furniture too.

  3. Look at all your finds! I always get so impatient going through clothes and stuff there! I did buy my first thrift shop piece of clothing this week though!

  4. I'm so jealous about these awesome thrift stores everyone has. There are about 3 thrift stores in my area, and every time I go there is nothing, or it's way overpriced. I completely missed the post on this challenge though, which I'm still mad about :P Would have gave me a reason to spend $20.

    Love your finds!

  5. I'm jealous of those red Target mittens. I definitely paid $6 in the store when they were on clearance.

  6. lol, vintage floral sheets for Mr Kelly... you witty thing you :)

  7. I love challenges- both seeing everyones responses and doing them myself. That's quite a haul!! I did the challenge too:

  8. Those mittens and that blanket are awesome! Our thrift shops don't carry anything that hip!

  9. My "job" used to be buying things at the local goodwill and reselling them online for a profit, so its hard to pick a favorite. I once spent $10 on a framed, numbered Georges Braque lithograph and $6 on an original Sharon Ader pen drawing. It was [censored] awesome.

  10. Several of our local Midwest stores are under new management too and we have definitely noticed a hike in prices! Loving the cow-shaped creamer from Target. I snagged a couple of cheap Target finds on my run too!

  11. Our Salvation Army prices are jacked up too! I shop all the stores, I don't want to miss anything Awesome. I have to say the RKelly sheet thing kind of grosses me out! (but yours are lovely!)

  12. my pink pyrex I scored that is very similar to yours was $3.25 in Virginia!

  13. Woah, inexpensive clothes!!! Our Goodwill has overpriced clothes. And pretty much everything. Maybe I need to find a Salvation Army nearby. Cute pjs!

  14. I missed out on the challenge, but clearly your goodwill is SO much better than mine. They think their wares are solid gold, and they price them accordingly.

  15. I LOVE THE GOODWILL!! It is seriously one of my favorite stores, and our goodwill is always filled with items from Target with tags still attached too. You found a lot of really great stuff!! We also participated in the Thrift Shop Challenge and had so much fun!
    PS… love your puppy!

  16. Ewwww to R Kelly's sheets, but I do love a good find with the tags still on!! I made a fool of myself during the challenge by trying on multiple ridiculous outfits and photographing myself in public. Whatever, I'm new to town and you only have one chance to make a first impression! ;)

  17. Great finds! I wish I had seen this challenge before; looks like fun!

  18. I'm obsessed with those mittens...and I wish I had great thift shops near me. So jealous of yours. :-/

  19. I love your purse in the picture in the mirror, would you share what kind and where you got it please! :)

    1. It's Kate Spade. Sign up for their e-mails. I purchased it for a great price during a flash sale!

    2. Awesome! Thanks for replying, I'll have to do that :)

  20. You totally got me with the "R. Kelly's sheets." Looks like you got a lot of cool and useful stuff! ~Heather P.

  21. Love your finds- especially R. Kelly's sheets! haha.

  22. I really miss the thrift stores in Iowa. The thrift stores here in Utah are the WORST. There really is only one option--no Salvation Army, no Goodwill, no little local stores, just this one chain called DI, and it is just about worthless. I love the pyrex dishes you're always picking up, and your new jammies are lovely.

  23. Hey, good job!
I participated in the challenge as well. I think my fav. find is a tie between the cowhide pillow I found and fossil bag (the bag doesnt really count because it was an extra buy I couldnt say no to).

  24. Nice!! I spaced out on the challenge, but my $20 in Atlanta wouldn't have gotten me nearly as many things!! It's amazing how differently Salvation Army's price things. Looks like you had a good day!

  25. That's the kind of challenge I think is a fun time. I had never heard the song before, and admit I had to listen to the more adult version. I think some talented thrifting DIY bloggers should make their own parody of it. Hint.

  26. Wow awesome finds....I'm going to have to try this...some how I think my Salvation Army is not that amazing! Have a great weekend!

  27. Such great finds! I never have that kind of luck thrifting. I really should go more often.
    With Luck

  28. That plaid blanket is a bad mamma jamma. Good work.

  29. Ditto! You got a fantastic deal on that plaid throw.

  30. Hi, I popping over from YHL :) Plaid, Pyrex and pajamas = the perfect thrift!

  31. that blanket is gorgeous! (i have a weakness for vintage-y blankets). i've never seen a creamer in that colour... i like it. =)
