Wood Floor Questions Answered

Some of the most often asked questions I receive are about our wood floors.

I’ll be a good blogger and answer some of those questions today.

What is the type of wood floors do you have?  They are BR111's Brazillian Cherry (Solid Wood).

Do you like your floors?  We love them!  We love how the color has changed over time. They started light and have darkened over time.  We would definitely install them again.  Brazilian Cherry is a hard wood and it has held up great for the almost 4 years that we have lived in the house.

I like the look of wood floors but I’m afraid my dog would scratch them to pieces.  How have they held up against Ike?  Ike is a little dog (24 lbs) but he’s also crazy.  He tears across them when we get home at night or whenever we have company.  We are starting to notice a little wear at the bottom of the stairs and around some corners.  The wear is all the dog.  The scratches aren’t extremely visible though.  I only notice them when I am cleaning them.

Your wood floors always look so clean.  How do you clean them?  First, they aren’t always clean.  I’m just slowly learning to not put disgusting pictures on the blog.  The gross ones always end up on Pinterest.  We generally have a clean house but I can only clean these floors so many times in a week.  My time is better spent…blogging.  The summer is the worst.  Sweaty man feet and dog drool could keep me busy for days.  I try to relax a little more during the summer.  We are outside more.  We use the deck more.  My husband sweats more.  The dog drools more.  Life happens.  It just means I bust out the mop and Bruce’s floor cleaner a little more often. (We purchase the floor cleaner at Lowe’s.)

Look directly right of this photo….running dog prints.  Pinning the following photo will result in bad karma.

Any other wood floor related questions?  Are you a wood floor fan or do you prefer fluffy carpet or tile?  Anyone else struggle to keep the house clean with a sweaty life partner and drooling furry friend?

  1. Shedding furry friends here. I clean the furballs up as soon as I see them. Oh wait, that's not true...maybe this is why I am sneezing so much this summer?

Your floors ARE gorgeous. I am tempted to pin that paw print photo just to see what will happen. ;)

  2. We use Bruce's on our hardwoods too, it's the best thing I've found out there plus it works great on vinyl floors.

  3. I love your floors. We have old wooden floors through half of our downstairs and carpet in the formal living and dining rooms. We plan to install hardwoods throughout but it might be a while. This is a great post though! I'm going to try to Bruce.

  6. Our wood floors are the bane of my existence. They show everything and I just don't have it in me to follow both my boys and the dog around with my swiffer. Sigh.. But they sure are pretty when they are clean! Which is about 6% of the time. Double sigh..

    1. We had a local flooring company install them. We installed wood floors in our first house and it took a long time. We were getting antsy to get into the house by floor installation time with this house.

  8. We have dark hardwoods and they are impossible to keep clean... or maybe that's my housekeeping skills...

How brave of you to mention your sweaty man feet on your blog! Are Nate's feet usually pretty clean though?

  9. Keeping wood floors clean are even a problem in my house - and I'm the only one I can blame!

  10. I love your floors!! I can't believe they are not scratched more, they must be good. I have dark wood floors as well, and I see everything in them! I usually mop once a week, and dry mop the rest of the week. I can see Ike sliding everywhere in the house, just like my two nut cases do to mine.

  11. Ha! I constantly post shots on my blog with dusty floors covered in dog prints! We went with a super dark bamboo though, so any little bit of dust or dirt shows up like crazy. And we're pretty relaxed about it. I love the red hue of your floors. So pretty!

  13. I love wood floors! We have them in about 90% of our house. I also have Brazilian Cherry wood floors in a condo that I own in Chicago...they are fantastic. We haven't had any issues, even after my renter flooded the place!

  14. I like wood floors, but I would require a housekeeper in order to keep them clean. So until I can afford a housekeeper, the wood floors will have to wait. The laminate in our kitchen and foyer are enough for me.

  15. i looooove your floors. Seriously love. Also, I have pretty much wood floor envy all the time now since our whole house is tile/carpet. Blech. Someday....

  16. I adore wood floors. We have laminate throughout our 1k sq ft studio. We also have a yellow lab an a 106 lb black lab mix. I can totally relate to the drool. That doesn't bother me near as much as all the hair. We have a little Dyson that helps, but it's a twice a day chore...or every other day if I know nobody is coming by...but then someone always does....

  17. The more I see your floors, the more I love them! I would love to go dark like that but I am afraid Rosie's hair would show up too much! So, basically everything in my house has to be beige...or I have to clean more! LOL! Thanks for the floor advice. This is a perfect post for me to read these days! Enjoy the rest of your week!

  19. For those of you who are in the process of choosing a hardwood floor that is pet friendly and easy to maintain, keep these things in mind. There is no such thing as a bullet proof hardwood floor. No matter how durable the finish is, it will still scratch, dent and show wear over time. All you can do is choose a floor that will show less. A dark glossy floor will make imperfections in the floor more visible. Consider choosing a floor that is medium-light in color, and has a matte or semi-gloss finish. Another option is to go with a distressed floor. Since the flooring already has indentations and chatter marks from the factory, scratches and indentations will not stand out as they would on a perfectly smooth floor. If you are going to go with a smooth dark floor, I would strongly recommend looking into oil finished floors. You can quickly and easily fix imperfections in the floor by touching it up with the maintenance oil. The oil finish is also not as glossy as most pre-finished floors, so it will show less. You can find all of these products on our web site www.CoronaHardwood.com

  20. Any search of natural or organic or non-toxic floor cleaning solutions is bound to return a lot of results suggesting baking soda and vinegar, sometimes mixed together. These can be effective cleaning agents in some situations but they're not the right the answer for cleaning hardwood floors.

  30. Can I ask another question? Not that one. Lol. What's the floor finish? It's the first thing we need to consider before cleaning wood floors. I've learned that unlike tiles and carpet, wood floor cleanup is more specific.
