Walking With Ike

Now that tax season is over, we’re back to walking an hour every night.  Ike is loving it.

Walking with Ike is interesting.  We have met lots of people in town because of his fuzzy face.

Kids love Ike.  A little girl that just moved into the neighborhood came running out of her house to give Ike a giant dog treat.  He, of course, now loves this little girl.  Kids always want to pet him.  I don’t think I accurately portray Ike on this blog.  The dog is nuts.  We are cautious with him and kids only because he gets so excited.

What else do we hear while walking Ike?

“Well, helloooo.” ~random old ladies last night.  (He’s a total ladies man.)

“I like your puppy.” or “Hi, pretty puppy.” ~small children  (These melt my heart.)

“What kind of dog is that?”

“He’s so pretty/happy/beautiful/fuzzy.”

He also prances after compliments.  He’s a special dog.

Our town is full of little parks that lead into one another.  It’s quaint.  And quiet.  And perfect for walking.  I love small town Iowa.

Ike loves small town Iowa too.

Any fellow walkers out there?  Does your dog behave on walks? Ike is surprisingly awesome on walks.  Can you enjoy a nice introverted walk or does your dog force you to be social?

  1. Foster loves walks around our neighborhood. It's like sensory overload for him. Most people look at him and call him a "big boy" and I'm more like "big baby". When we get home he hits the hardwoods to cool off, belly flat all 4's out.

  2. this cracked me up because last night i wrote a post for sunday about my walks with jake complete with pictures of him greeting the calves! :) our area isn't necessarily conducive to walking as we are more out in the country, but i love walking the way i go- it's around 3 miles or so, but the first half is all uphill with a couple of steep climbs. i am so happy when i turn around to walk back and only have to face the last big hill up our driveway. :) ike is so cute- jake loves his walks, too. because he is my little walking buddy now, he follows me all over the house and i love it.

  3. I need to find myself a small town around PA. They all seem to get taken over my factories and interstates.

    Iowa is gorgeous.

  4. I think this breed is like a rick star....no matter where we go people comment on our Sophie. I was at a stop sign and Sophie was hanging out the back window and the guy behind me was yelling hey lady hey lady.....my first thought was dude I'll go when I can....but he is what kind of dog is that? She is so pretty! When we lived in Germany I'd take her on the trams I have no idea what people would say to me about her but again she was a rock star and she knew it! Have a wonderful time on your walks! It's just getting nice again here to walk!

  5. I walk Lana a lot around a local lake full of geese and ducks. She loves it and so do I. She is very good on walks, and kids flock to her like a magnet. I meet more people out and about with her with me, than when I'm alone. Dog people flock to each other!

  6. I am not really sure that is a town... more of an unincorporated community. At least that is how I saw it growing up there. I would love to return someday. I do miss the parks and sidewalks. You don't realize other places are not like that when you grow up with it.

  7. Ike would be a ladies man. Jack would live at the park if we would let him. Every night when Brad gets home from work Jack gets so excited because he knows it's time to go to the park. He loves greeting people at the park. We'll let him say hello if the person initiates contact. We have to be careful with him with little kids because he loves to jump up and kiss their faces. It's like he knows that the little people always taste like sugary goodness.

  8. So adorable! He must be loving those walks! My little Rosie is very social and has to great every single person when we are outside. People are really drawn to her because she is a puppy. I am working with her to not jump up on everyone when she greets them because when she gets to be full grown, they won't be enjoying that very much! She also does that adorable prancing when she is impressed with herself. I love that town you live in. How peaceful!

  9. Ike reminds me of my my in-laws' dog, Teddy. He is very curly and fluffy and gets SUPER excited. He's calmed down a bit (he is 6 now) but he's a very funny dog.

  10. Wow the parks in your town are just gorgeous! I wish we had something like that here.
We're pretty cautious when it comes to kids & our dogs as well, even though they both loooooove kids, the problem is their size and huge amounts of excitement can be a bit much to handle for the small people.

  11. Ike is so cute! We don't have a dog (yet), but my parents apparently have met quite a few neighbors in the past couple of years thanks to daily walks with their dog. He's pretty well-behaved, but people just flock to him!

I've been reading your blog for a while (I actually just linked to it in my post today), but this is my first time commenting. Your house is gorgeous, but that dog of yours is the best! :)

  12. Count your blessings! I have an English Springer that never learned to walk on a leash. He'll drag me down the road faster than I go when I jog. What a beautiful little town you live in with those parks! So jealous.

  13. I just love Ike's little face. My parents have a Welsh Terrier and I imagine that they are similar. She has soo much personality...
Our Cooper loves walks. He is super social too. We love that he likes people so much, but my arms sure do get worn out!

  14. I have two labs. They haven't met a person they don't like but they (especially the yellow lab) tend to be a little overly-affectionate (ie, they jump on people.) It's a bad habit we've tried to curb over the years. They are better, but if we're not watching their over-enthusiasm for the human species will result in belly-to-belly dog hugs.
They also LOVE walks and parks and water. Oh boy do they love water.

  15. He is too cute, you should make a video and post it of Ike, So that we may see just how crazy he really is....we really don't quite believe it ;). I HATE to take my two schnauzers out, be it for walks, or appt. They totally misbehave, as soon as they "think" that they will be going out, they go nuts, in the car they cry the whole ride, especially when we slow down, and on walks they pull me in every direction, and bark non stop. I would like to take them out more often, but really, they embarrass me to no end.

  16. Our dogs Strider and Echo love their walks, but the love chasing the ball even more. There's a park right around the corner from our house that we take them too and it has a long, rectangular shape so it's perfect for throwing the ball. There's also a playground in the park which equates to lots of kids running up to our dogs to pet them and say hi. Strider's great with kids..he just sits there basking in the attention. Echo however is still a puppy and she wants to PLAY with them so she's jumping all over the place like a jack rabbit. Ah, puppies.

I always think it's funny when you meet other dog owners on a walk or at the dog park. It's rare that you actually know the owners' names, but you always remember the dogs' names!

  17. Awww I love it!! Your parks look gorgeous, exactly how I picture Iowa in my mind. Maybe someday we will go there, its where much of James extended family lives. Sammy is good with people on walks, he hates other dogs when he is on leash though. Cash is getting good on walks, and people love him too!! We have to always warn them before they can pet him, he is still jumpy at 8 months old. I hope it wears off soon!! So glad your getting to spend time with Nate again!!

  18. Our dog has a multiple personality disorder. Around John and I, she's the calmest, sweetest, least annoying dog ever. So fun. Around EVERYONE ELSE, she's the opposite. Super hyper and yaps at everything. She's still sweet though. She just gets SOOO excited about new people that she goes over the top. I'm trying to teach her restraint. It hasn't gone too well yet.

Needless to say, she's not easy to walk with. :-)

  19. I would definitely stop Ike and give him some love if I saw him on a walk - he's so cute!!
I love taking my dogs on walks, and they love it too, of course. Bubba is pretty well behaved on a leash but Juno is a disaster if she sees another dog. She will tug, pull and bark her head off until either she gets to say 'hi' or we get out of sight.
Unfortunately we don't get many comments about how cute they are, mainly just comments about how Juno has 'evil eyes'. (they're just light blue...)

  21. Ike's adorable! Our puppy is just starting to do well on walks - she's a toy poodle. People stop us all the time, but she doesn't like giving love to strangers (other than little kids), so we don't get held up for very long.

  22. Great photos! What a great way to meet people! Our dog is insane of walks, Hubby takes him out at night when no one is around!!

  23. Jesse and I love to go on walks after dinner, but here lately we've been running together after work. Gotta get ready for my first 5k next month!

  24. Norman has been loving the Spring weather here. He is a bit of a spaz and doesn't like people so I feel like we spend most walks apologizing to people who want to pet him. He is just his own man. I would stop and pet Ike though. Well, only if I didn't have Norman, he would probably try to jump on his head while making horrible squealing stuck pig noises (seriously, I'm not exaggerating)

  27. We've got a prissy dog who definitely prances when he realizes he's being noticed. :-) Great that y'all get to walk for so long each night. Wonderful bonding/social/exercise time!

  28. What a beautiful place to walk! My poor dog has been so neglected in the last couple weeks. Her exercise lately is playing fetch, which actually is probably her favorite thing in the world, so really she needs to stop complaining.

  29. My pup Jerzee and I walk every Friday, but it's in the morning, and most people who are out are either running or walking their dogs. You got some great pics of your walk! Your area is just beautiful!

  30. I would like a dog so I can pick up men. Think it'd work? One like Ike would be just fantastic. :)

  31. Ollie looooves walks...looking for the neighborhood cats is his favorite pasttime. He knows where they like to hang out, so he gets extra alert when we're coming up on one of the "cat houses". As far as meeting people goes, I think he likes the idea of it more than he actually likes when it happens...he gets really excited and waggy when we see someone coming but then if they try to pet him, he gets shy and hides behind me. The weirdest thing was when we were at a farmer's market and someone asked if they could take a picture of him! I said yes, and Ollie felt like a rockstar, haha.

  32. maisy is insane ion a walk! she is sociable with people but a nightmare with select dogs...at times she wags and wants to play at other times a dog sets her off and she wants to eat it!

  34. Yui has made us A LOT more social through walking her. We knew pretty much none of our neighbors before and we had lived in the apartment complex for a little over a year at that point. Now we know all the doggies on the block and have made some lovely friends. Ike is so darn cute! I am sure he gets a lot of attention on walks. It looks beautiful there! Can I teleport to Iowa and take Yui on walks there?
