No Good Very Bad Day Cupcakes

Have you ever had one of those days?  You know, where you get out of bed and put on your favorite grey sweater.  You are all warm, looking cute, and ready to conquer the day.  Ten minutes later you realize your favorite sweater has purple stains…probably from your second favorite sweater.

Whatever.  You can handle this.

You then put on another sweater that has a new giant hole.  Gee.  This is stinky.  You finally find a sweater that will work (but isn’t nearly as cute as you’d like).  Bring it.

You go to work and are immediately bombarded with a million and twelve different annoying things.  This isn’t any different than normal but on this particular day you just can’t handle it.  So you sob at work in the storage room for 10 minutes. And then you sob some more because you are mad at yourself for sobbing in the storage room.

The day continues in the manner.  It is a full moon.  You have a headache from fighting back tears.  You decide after lunch that once 5:00 PM hits the world will become a better place….because you will make cupcakes.

Not just any cupcakes.   Death by Oreo Cupcakes.  Seems like a good way to go.

Recipe adapted from Instructables

Death by Oreo Cupcakes

  • 1 package Oreo Cookies, regular size
  • 1 package chocolate cake mix (mix according to directions on box)
    • I used Betty Crocker’s Super Moist Triple Chocolate.  I don’t mess around.
  • 8 ounces cream cheese, room temperature
    • I’d probably use less cream cheese next time.  Only because I don’t love cream cheese. It’s growing on me.  Slowly.
  • 1/2 cup butter (1 stick), room temperature
  • 3 3/4 cups powdered sugar
    • I used 4 cups…to cover up some of that cream cheese.
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Mix packaged cake mix according to directions (do not bake).

Line cupcake tins with liner, place a regular size Oreo cookie in the bottom of each liner. (Yes, you read that right.  The Oreo at the bottom is a fun little surprise.)

Take 1/2 of remaining cookies and chop coarsely and add to cake mix. Fill the cupcake tins.

Bake for according to box directions.

Frosting: Cream together butter and cream cheese. Add vanilla, then add powdered sugar slowly until blended well. Chop remaining regular-sized Oreos very fine (The original recipe said food processor.  I placed them in a Ziploc bag and rolling pinned the heck out of them.  Worked like a charm.) Add to frosting.

After cupcakes have cooled, frost.

Eat them.  A lot of them.  The world suddenly becomes an amazing place again.

Going to bed at 9:00PM doesn’t hurt either.

What’s your go-to bad day vice?  Cupcakes?  Cookies?  Wine?  Apples?  Today is going to be much better.  I can feel it!

  1. aww i'm sorry you had a bad day :(. I have had one of those the past two days...all house stuff...everything is up in the air and i am not sure i can emotionally handle it anymore! apparently i need to make these cupcakes!

  2. Sorry girl, those days suck, I have had a few. Not much in the world cupcakes can't cure!

  3. My go-to bad day vice is flavoured coffee. A nice warm cup of caramel or vanilla coffee, fresh out of the dryer pajamas and a few episodes of New Girl usually do the trick for me.

  4. I do not like this story. Crying to at work is bad. It doesn't mean good things. :o( And sorry about the sweaters, that is hugely disappointing. Hope today is much better and the cupcakes helped! Keep your head up my friend!

  5. Sorry you had a rough day. At least you had a storage closet to hide in and cry. When I was teaching I would have to hide under my desk, pretending that I was searching for something. Stressful places of work need "crying rooms". There would be a comfy sofa, pillows, fun music, cupcakes, and cookies.

Those look amazing. Nice job on the frosting. How many did you eat? Because I would have eaten at least two.

  6. OH NO!! I hate days like that! I'm sorry you had a bad day. My go to vice is ice cream. Loads of it. I wish it were apples.

    I hope you have a cute-feeling, question-conquering, avoid-the-storage-room great day today.

  7. I had the exact same kind of day...only it got worse when I got home. Spilling food on the floor right from the stove. Tying not to let the dogs attack it so they don't burn their little mouths. GAH! So I drank my wine like water!

  8. I'm sorry about your bad day!
It made for an amazing post though, yum!

  9. Holy shit. There's an oreo at the bottom. Is cupcake marriage illegal? Will definitely try these!

  10. Major sadface. That's no way for a Wednesday to go! Those cupcakes really look like they'd solve just about anything, though. Amazing. Hope today is better than yesterday!!

  11. I LOVE Oreos....this is going to be a great little surprise for my kids and husband (and me;) on Friday...yum! Thanks for sharing! Sorry to hear you had a bad day, but it sure sounds like you had a better evening.

  12. Wine. Mine is wine. There is nothing in this world that a little Merlot can't fix. But I have to assume these cupcakes do a darn fine job too! Sorry you had a bad day, and here's to hoping that today is better!!

  13. When I have a bad day, I make pancakes. Pancakes that are fried up in Crisco. They are amazing (so much better than with butter) and totally cheer me up.

  14. These sound so good! My bad day vice is usually a margarita lol. And I love your title! Alexander and the No Good Very Bad Day was one of my favorite books growing up! :)

  15. Boo for bad days. Those treats look amazing and definitely worth every bite. My bad day vice is usually something chocolate related. I'm not picky.

  16. Those look yummy, but my go-to bad-day food has got to be Chips and Salsa.

  17. I had a really crappy day yesterday, too. I wish I had thought of making cupcakes. These look yummy.

  18. Sorry to hear you had a rough day :( hopefully the rest of your week isn't so rough & maybe there will be some down-time on the weekend to shake off the funk.

However, these cupcakes look delicious. As soon as I am willing and able to make & ingest sugary confections again, these are going straight to the top of my baking list!

  19. Sorry you had such a crappy day but those cupcakes look like the perfect way to try and make it better. I go for a good glass of red wine the minute I walk in the door.

  20. I hate those days! But I think those cupcakes can solve anything. Thanks for sharing ;)

  21. i like to have a glass of wine and get to bed early to just end the bad day and wake up with a clean slate!

  22. Damn you Michelle, now I have to make these! Oreos are my favorite and chocolate cake is my second favorite. Then I'm going to wash it all down with a chocolate milkshake that is my third favorite!

  23. If I'm having a bad day, I usually don't get as far as baking the cakes. I eat the mix raw then move onto the frosting. I know I'm disgusting. But it tastes soooooo damn good.

  24. Poor Michelle. Do I need to take someone down? Cause I will do it. I'm just across the river.

  25. Oh no!!! Glad cupcakes could cure your blues. I usually go for a nice glass of vino and some quiet, alone time.

  26. Oh Michelle. I had a day just like that today. I think I'm going to need a double batch of your cupcakes and a bottle of wine.

  27. Aww I'm sorry you had a rough day. :( Chocolate does have a way of making everything better!

  28. Must have just been that kind of day yesterday...if it makes you feel better, we had to gut our master bathroom because of a new found water leak? :-) I'm definitely make the cheer up cupcakes tomorrow after work, they sound amazing!

  29. Sometimes I have those kind of days too. It seems like this week has been a roller coaster week for me. Really bad, then really good, then crappy, then SOOOO good, then craptastic again!
I have a headache thinking about it.

And that is why I've eaten ONE WHOLE MEDIUM BAG of pretzel M&Ms. oops.

Maybe sometime I will try those delightful cupcakes, but picking up a bag of M&Ms at walgreens was so quick!

  30. Yes. Now this is my kind of post. You have cupcake decorating SKILLS! Death by Oreos, yep. If I had a choice, I'd pick that.

  31. oh my god... I hate days like that, it's like you're fighting the world... and then all of a sudden a comfort-food snack and snuggle from the hubby (and early bedtime) make everything better!!! Those look absolutely DELISH! Can't wait to try them- but I think my body can!

  32. I'm obsessed with anything Oreo-related lately, so these are making my mouth water. I'll have to try them soon!

  33. For me, getting through a bad day can be remedied with a spoonful of peanut butter. I don't know what it is about it, but it's like Xanax to me (though, in all honesty, I've never had Xanax, so I wouldn't really know).

However, just looking at the deliciousness of these cupcakes has me smiling already. :)

  34. Blah! Thankfully it's weekend now!! I think these would work beautifully for feeding both good and bad emotions.

  35. i know i'm late in saying this but i'm sorry you had a bad day. (i read it at work the day you posted it but my work blocks most blogs and yours i can ready but can't post's weird...i did say a little prayer for you though, does that count?) those cupcakes look fantastic. i'm an anything chocolate and peanut butter or ice cream kinda girl. :)
