Something Is In The Water

Is everyone you know having babies?  Yeah, me too.

That means lots of baby showers.  I loathe showers of all kinds (well, besides daily cleaning myself showers.  Eh, nevermind…I hate those too).  I’m the worst female on the planet.  The games, the “oooing” and the “ahhing”.  Drives me bonkers.

I do love my friends and their soon to be spawn though…so I go.  With a fake smile on my face…and a lovely handmade gift in hand.

This week-end I attended a shower for a friend from pharmacy school.  I whipped her up my go to baby blanket….the day before the shower. If I can make this, you can make this…

Her nursery is brown and pink so I decided to stick with that.  Always the safe one.

I tried to take step by step photos but I got bored/forgot after about step 1.  I promise I’ll do better on the next one.  In the meantime, you can check out a similar blanket pattern here!

I also decided to try out a project I have been meaning to try forever…appliqueing a onesie…

These may or may not have been made to represent the lovely Iowa Hawkeyes.  I can’t tell you for sure because I am sure there is some kind of copyright law.  But it’s an “I”…there is no copyright on the letter “I”….or black and gold.

These are so easy.

Buy some Heat n’ Bond iron on adhesive.  Follow package directions and iron on Heat n’ Bond to fabric of your choice.  Trace object of your choice onto fabric (“I” in my example).  Cut out object.  Remove paper Heat n’ Bond paper from fabric.  Place object in desired position on onesie.  Iron into place as directed on package.  Stitch around outer edge of object in whatever stitch/size you prefer.  Done-zo.  I told you it was easy.

My stitching isn’t perfect but I think it gives it character.  People at the shower were asking where I bought them.  Yay handmade!

What’s your favorite go to baby shower gift?  What’s the worst baby shower game you have ever played?  I think if we ever decide to have spawn, I will have a couples shower to make Nate suffer too.  I’m a good wife….

  1. Obsessed. My best friend found out she's having TWINS yesterday!!!! Big news around here. I hate showers too. Hers will be twice as long *rolls eyes*. Lol! I'm making these onesies out of necessity so she can figure out who's who. Thanks for the steal-able idea & tutorial! Love it. You're really getting so Martha on me.

  3. CUTE!!! Jen made my girls some shirts - she appliqued umbrellas onto shirts - but she just sewed them on with the machine. She said it was kind of hard. I will MAKE SURE she sees this post with your method - looks a bit easier!

  4. Very cute Michelle! I didn't know you had it in you! :) I love the blankets - would love to know how you made them. My go to give is the aden and anais blankets. As someone with 'spawn' they are a wonderful gift! Love reading your blog and getting ideas!

  5. Love the onesies! Such a cute gift! How did you make that blanket?? I'm always curious with the last side & making it look seamless!

  6. Ha! When I was pregnant, so were nine of my other friends. NINE. That was a lot of showers. You might be the best pal ever, though, because those are great gifts!

  7. I love this post! You made me feel more normal! :) I, too, love my friends and family, but hate all showers. I am not good at the oohing and awing either. I would rather do just about anything else. Sad, huh? Love the blanket and the onsies! Great ideas! I may steal this and make it my go-to gift.

  8. Ha! Love it. I'm a fellow shower-hater. I mean, yeah, no, it's true. Not a fan of showers. But I'm totally loving the blanket and onesie!! I really want to make some gifts for my sister's baby, but need something super simple since I'm not at all crafty. Maybe yours and Kim's craftiness will run off on me in February. : )

  9. I love the blanket! It's adorable! I've had to do bridal showers and they weren't so bad, but I haven't gotten to the baby shower stage yet, so we'll see if I always feel that way!

  10. Those are adorable!!! You did a great such a great job. Showers are tough, but it looks like you made the best of it with such awesome gifts!

  11. I've been to a few really awkward showers where you only know the person the shower is for and you are at the mercy of the other guests to make you feel welcome. I don't attend those kind of showers anymore! The games are bad enough (melt a candybar in a diaper and guess what it is? Seriously?) without snotty women acting like they are in HS all over again.

  12. Fellow shower hater too. HATE THEM. And it's a thousand times worse when you're the one it's being thrown for. With baby showers especially, there are only so many different ways you can say "awww, this is so cute!" I'm pinning these gift ideas and resurrecting them next time I attend one though!

  13. I love Purl bee!!!!!!!

I like to knit baby bibs. I also am a fan of sewing a blanket. Try this on next time. http://www.aboveallfabric.com/blog/?p=5114. It is a self binding or "magic" blanket. So easy to make and looks fancy.

  14. You are not alone my friend! I hate showers but thankfully I'm pretty much past that phase of my life. Your gifts are gor-geous, seriously. Well done on both!!!!

  15. Cute gifts! Handmade gifts are always my favorite to receive. Except for the one handmade blanket I got at Forrest's baby shower that was so bright, it literally gave me a headache to look at--it was knit in nuclear shades of orange and yellow and blue, and it was truly blinding. I kept it in a drawer for about a year because I felt guilty getting rid of it since someone made it, but I finally tossed it when we moved. It was such a sweet thought and I really appreciated the time and work that went into it, but it was just painful to look at. Your gifts are adorable, though--they will definitely not be isolated in a drawer. And I don't like showers, either, of any sort. I tried to talk my friends out of throwing me a baby shower--I think they thought I was goofing around when I said how much I didn't want one. I ended up with two :-(

  16. I love handmade gifts! Those onesies are precious. They look awesome. I hate showers too...well, the typical shower that is. I don't do cheesy games and please, please no one make me create a bridal gown w/ toilet paper or smell melted candy from a diaper. ugh. Thankfully most of my close friends are the same so most showers are relatively painless.

  17. Super cute! I'm in love with that blanket, but I'm also in love with the one you made for Claire, so it's all good. You need to learn to make baby pants and then you could do coordinating pants for the onesies.

  18. That's a great looking blanket - I'm usually a diaper cake kind of girl myself but I should see about busting out the sewing machine. Worst game though? The smell-the-baby-food game... its almost enough to make me choose against children.

    1. Everyone seems to be dropping sprogs! Even people at work are suddenly having babies. Is there some cult we don't know about?! Luckily for me we don't really do showers in England (the baby kind that is). We just hand over a present, pretend the kid is cute and doesn't really look like Winston Churchill and be on our way! Phew. However, that blanket and onesies are fab and you will be able to make loads when you have your own babies! :)

  19. Those are adorable! I do like showers though, really just any type of party. I have a hostess soul. Anyways, I typically do either a diaper cake and/or a onesie bouquet. Both are useable, needed gifts and make a cute display! I think you should sew Ike some clothes or ties. The world needs more Ike photos!

  20. Super cute blanket! I'll let you know when I'm having spawn so you can make me one. ;)

Worst shower game ever: we had to cut out the eyes, ears, noses, hair, etc. from photos of the two parents-to-be and then paste them to the "baby" head to "guess what baby would look like!!!" The biggest problem was that the baby head was giant and the photos of the parents-to-be were tiny so the baby was predicted to be freakishly alien-like/born with hydrocephalus. Creepy.

  21. Those are awesome! You remind me a lot of my friend - she hates going to showers, too! The funny thing is, she is helping to host mine, hehe! I think handmade gifts are awesome...or anything from the registry. The worst is something totally random that makes no sense. Like at my bridal shoewr, my MIL gave me an Ireland shot glass. I'm pretty sure my family thought I was an alcoholic. Embarrassing.

  22. Ugh, I'm so with you on the showers. Like you, I love my friends and family, so I show up. I don't make handmade gifts though. That's where I draw the line. You, on the other hand get extra credit. Those onesies and the blanket rock!

  23. Oh I HATE showers - I want to have a swinging party, should I ever decide to reproduce. I think the worst game I've ever played is "Guess the Poo," where you have to guess what chocolate-based chopped up candy bar is melted into a diaper by shoving it (or having it unwillingly shoved) into your face. UGH. I don't know who thought of that one, but It. Is. Not. Cute.

  24. i think i am right on the cusp of my friends starting to have babies...it's all about the engagements right now. I don't like group "games" either tho, so i have a feeling i won't be a fan :)

love those onesies! and so easy!

  25. Gag... babies EVERYWHERE. Like you, I'm undecided on the baby issue. I despise showers. I'm engaged, and I'm seriously hoping no one makes me sit through my own boring bridal shower. Watching people open gifts for long periods of time makes me feel stabby. And that diaper game, with the chocolate bars... God help me if someone seriously wants me to do that. I love my friends and family, but no.

  26. Michelle, I felt the same way about baby showers and other people's babies before I had mine. In fact, when it came to passing around the baby I declined to hold it. You'll feel different (maybe) once you have your own. Anway, I love your blankets. I'm sure they're very much appreciated by your friends and their spawn. The onsies are very cute too.

  27. I am just now finally getting to the "everyone's getting married" stage since I was the youngest of my friends to get married... I'm currently dreading the baby shower stage... Soooo not ready for kiddos yet! I'm loving the gawking-at-babies-and-thinking-they're-adorable but not-losing-sleep-to-my-own stage! :)

    1. I'm sorry what Ashley?! You guys are baby sitting when we come up there? I'll let ya know how the Giants game goes. :p Right...

  28. I hate to say it, but it's probably gift cards, or something off the registry. I have hosted most of the baby showers I have attended, though. I don't think we played any games that I can remember, but there was one shower I went to that had something to do with big safety pins that I didn't quite understand. All I know is I lost pretty quickly. :)

  29. I love the onesie but I really needed to comment because I need to say a-freaking-men! I also hate weddings, yep I said it! i didn't want a baby shower because they're so not me! You want to know something even worse, I may have a baby and love mine but I don't love babies. Yep, I'm a non baby loving woman and mom!

  30. I hate showers too. Glad to know I'm not the only one! I started making burp rags for my baby showers. Everyone loves those!! I really like your onesie idea...may need to try that for the next one!

  31. So cute! And so funny, I'm not really into showers either... and I'm pregnant. But I love giving gifts and especially making cute ones :)

  32. Your stitching looks so much better than mine ever does when doing onesies. Those little baby clothes are just so tiny.

Love both the projects. You are good at shower gifts, even if you aren't a fan of showers. ;)
