What’s in store for our house in 2012?
To be honest, I’m not completely sure. I usually tackle projects when the vision comes to me. Once I get that vision in my head, you can’t stop me.
Let’s take a look at some areas that need some love. I’m not putting pressure on myself to tackle any of these. I really want to think through my design choices. I may also be asking you all for advice in the future. You all can be my vision assistants. I like it.
The office is on my list. It’s not like the office is horrendous. It just doesn’t feel right to me. Like it’s not really us. Or finished. It just feels a little “blah” to me. I don’t like the wall color. Nate does…or so he tells me. I think he likes it because it doesn’t involve painting.
A rarely seen area of our home is our finished basement. I use the term finished loosely. What? The Simpsons aren’t a hot design trend. Seriously? Ellipticals and boob lights aren’t either? Bummer. Guess we have some work to do.
I really want a bed frame to replace our icky bed skirt in our master bedroom. Nate can totally build a bed frame. Right? Right!
We’re pondering built-ins in our living room. I like the shelves but we’re thinking extra storage would be helpful if we ever decide to have spawn. (Mom, please read the key word “if” in that sentence.)
We’re torn on a kitchen backsplash. I’m sure it would like nice with the right tile choice. We’re totally commitment phobes on this one. And we both like the kitchen as is. Weird, right?
I’m also liking the idea of an 8 person table in our formal dining room. The bar height wasn’t our smartest decision. I feel like some of the reason we don’t use this room is because of it’s more formal feel. We’re definitely not formal people so why have a “formal” dining room. I want to be able to use it comfortably. And Nate likes building tables. Or is it that I like him to build tables? I don’t remember. That point is not important.
There you have it. A few maybe projects for the upcoming year.
Which room/project do you want us to tackle first? Who’s excited to be my vision assistant?
Your house is absolutely gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteI say basement...it's a blank canvas! I love it...doooo it!
ReplyDeleteBooooob lights! Heck yea! haha {oh their not that bad..... okay maybe they are, just a bit}.
ReplyDeleteWell I love your house. I think any changes you make to it, they will look absolutely fabulous!
This is completely random, but where did you get the tables you use for your nightstands?
ReplyDeleteI love your beautiful house!
It sounds like the Office and the Basement are the two spaces that you feel the least happy with, so you could start there if you two were ready/willing to take on full-room projects.
ReplyDeleteHowever if you're like me and need lots of time to plan out projects for larger spaces then focusing on the "smaller" tweaks (like adding storage to you bedroom or building a new table) might be more expedient and accomplish-able while you're in the planning stages for the other rooms.
Either way, your house is gorgeous but I know what you mean when you say you feel like a room isn't "you". Good luck with the upcoming brainstorming session, hope inspiration strikes :)
I have a boob light in my office that you can ADD to your basement, because ugly things become cuter when you group them right? BTW, you guys can totally do a bed frame in like five minutes. It's really not bad. Especially when your role is "supervisor."
ReplyDeleteI love your house! I think built-ins around the fireplace would look really nice!
ReplyDeleteYour house is so beautiful! I love your sectional in the basement and the Simpsons art. ;) The Hubsy and I love Star Wars, so we want to have a Star Wars room/space for our toys like Princess crowns and other immature things lol
ReplyDeleteAnd "I think he likes it because it doesn’t involve painting." describes my Hubsy to a tee!
I love all those ideas Michelle!! I think the built in's in the living room would be extra awesome though...
ReplyDeleteBoob lights...who thought of those things? I guarantee it wasn't a woman. We have one hanging in our entry. David likes it and I haven't yet had the heart to explain the connection to his subconscious.
ReplyDeleteI say you should tackle the room you use most. That way you get to enjoy whatever changes you make faster. Your home is still so lovely though.
We built our own bedframe, and it includes a trundle bed for the dogs! Maybe Ike would like his own mini-bed? http://www.housebella.com/2011/07/13/finishing-touches-platform-bed/
ReplyDeleteI think you should tackle what you want to do! :) I like the look of the basement though!
ReplyDeleteoh... I LOVE all of the ideas, especially the basement plans and building a frame for the master bed! Now that Eric and I have finally rounded out our much-needed tool collection, we'll definitely be working on a bed frame for both the master and guest bedroom, but they probably won't happen for a while. :) Other projects first!!!
ReplyDeletePS- I wanna see Nate build another table! ;)
I say living room built ins cuz I really want the "spawn". Maybe you could do that first then tackle the decorating projects? Sherri
ReplyDeleteDon't know which room to tackle first, but want to offer some vision (taking the vision assistant thing seriously!)--or, questions that might get you to one?
ReplyDeleteAll of your rooms have great foundations--nice wall colors, nice "big stuff" furniture. Would love to see you do in all of them what you want to do in the office, which is add more of yourself to them. Think you did that with your powder room. So the questions would be: What part of a room shows who you really are? How can you amplify/multiply that? What would you love to do--but feel a little afraid to do? What's one thing you might do in a rom to play it just a little less safe?
Hope this provides some productive food for thought--recently discovered your blog and looking forward to seeing what you come up with!
I don't know that I've ever seen boob lights. I feel like I'm missing out.
ReplyDeleteAre those zinc or metal bucket seats in the kitchen? How do you like them? I'm tempted to get some.
ReplyDeleteAs far as what to tackle first, I think the room you use most whether or not it's seen by other often. :)
I'm loving the row of globes in the office. Don't get rid of them - use them as inspiration!
ReplyDeleteI like the built-ins idea. I think they would look great in that space. I love your basement. Look at all that space! I'd have a dance party down there every weekend if it were my basement. Replace boob light with disco ball? Yes?
ReplyDeleteI agree with being a commitmentphobe when it comes to tile. It is so hard to change (unlike paint). I say the formal dining room! Maybe then you will use it more often!
ReplyDeleteWell the basement is a blank canvas so start imagining the possibilities!!
ReplyDeleteYour house is gorgeous! I love the big windows.
ReplyDeleteWhen it comes to remodeling for us, we are really different! My husband will walk through the store and see a piece here or there that he wants to add or replace in different rooms. I, on the other hand, will scour the internet for ideas to completely overhaul just one room. It's all or nothing for me!
I have a vision for your house: Simpson art in every room. Your future spawn will love it.
ReplyDeleteLol. Yes, Nate CAN totally build a bed frame. I'd like to vote for that project because I'd like the tutorial :)
ReplyDeleteThe nightstands in our bedroom are from Crate and Barrel. (The Brighton collection).
ReplyDeleteOur kitchen chairs are the Jackson Metal Tub Chair from World Market...and we love them!!
Office! But maybe just because I need to work on our office and I'd rather copy you than come up with my own ideas. Also? I love the wall color in there. Deeply. If you decide to change it can I just take your walls and put them into my office?
ReplyDeleteOh the possibilities. I think the basement would love your help in getting a makeover. Can't wait to see what you decide to do.
ReplyDeleteDo the basement!!! I'm so jealous of your beautiful house by the way!!
ReplyDeleteI think the basement needs the most love.
ReplyDeleteI am ashamed to admit I have the same boob light fans, and like them. ;) They are a huge improvement over the fans in the last house.
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to your projects in 2012. If hubby isn't excited, just tell him it's all for the blog. Ryan loves that one.
Exciting! I'd love to see you (Nate) conquer the built-ins! Extra storage is nice to have on hand =)
ReplyDeleteThis may seem like a weird random thing to notice but I really love your collection of globes in your office. I am redoing our office which I started in September for my hubby's b-day. Slacker, I know.
ReplyDeleteI really want to find globes like yours.
Love it all! You have a fabulous home.

Boob lights! HA!!! That's like the naked lady air freshener. Guys like that, too, and they don't know why.
ReplyDeleteThere *is* something not right with your office, and I think it might be all that white down at one end. You've got the built-ins, a window,a french door, and the white ceiling all bunched together there. Maybe you just need to paint the ceiling.
Such great projects! I can't wait to see how things turn out. I agree with the commenter who said that the office is off balanced and that it might be contributing to your unease with it.
ReplyDeleteAs for the kitchen -- I have an opinion! White subway tile for a backsplash, and carry it all the way up to the top of the cabinets over the stove (behind the hood). Simple and classic yet clean and modern, too.
Looks great! Can't wait to see what you decide!
