DIY Beer Tasting Flight Carrier

This post is for the dudes. And the beer drinking chicks.  Which doesn’t include me.  Unless it’s in the form of a straw-ber-ita. I’m that girl.  I wish I was cool enough to be one of those beer drinking girls. But beer is gross.  And I’m obnoxious enough without alcohol.

DIY Beer Tasting Flight

Last week, Nate was all like “Hey Girl.  I’m going to make this beer tasting thing.  Wanna blog about it?”  I’d make a dorky Ryan Gosling-esque picture but he may divorce me.  Or not build me stuff.  Equally bad.

Nate likes beer.  Different varieties of beer.  It takes him at least 10 minutes in the freezing cold Target beer aisle to make his selection.  After about two minutes I threaten to head to the clothes department if he doesn’t hurry up. Grocery trips with us are fun.  Don’t even get me started on the trips to Hy-Vee Wine and Spirits when my brother comes to town.  At least TJMaxx is next door.

Back to the beer.

We like to host beer tastings on occasion.  Everyone brings a six pack to share. I drink Sangria that I don’t share.  (I am one heck of a host.)  We usually serve some kind of easy to prepare food like tacos or burgers.  It’s a super easy party to throw because the entertainment is discussing the many varieties of beer everyone brought.  Bam.  Party hosted.

Nate thought it would be fun to make fancy beer flights.

DIY Beer Tasting Flight

Because beer tastings totally need to be fancy. This would make a great gift for the dudes in your life!

Here is Nate’s tutorial. He’s a man of many words.

Materials

  • 1 x 4 - Need about 18" (I had a scrap piece laying around from other projects.)
  • 2 1/8" drill bit
  • 5 oz beer glasses (we bought ours from the dollar spot at Target) that are 2" at the bottom and flare out at the top
  • wood glue
  • clamps

Cut List

  • 1 - 13.5"
  • 2 - 2"

On the 13.5" board, put marks in the middle of the board at 2.25", 5.25", 8.25" and 11.25

Using the marks, drill the holes using the 2 1/8" drill bit

Glue the 2" pieces to the outside bottom of the long board.  Clamp overnight.

Sand smooth. Make sure to sand out the excess glue if you are staining as the stain will not absorb into the glue.

Stain and poly or paint.

Drink beer.

Have you hosted a beer tasting?  Or do you prefer to consume your calories in cupcake form?

  1. Yay, this is awesome! What a great project. We are totally the beer-tasting-party kind of people! Had one last year.
And I love beer! Come on, I'm German! But, LOL, I love Belgium beer, not German, go figure! My favorite is Leffe, you should try it, I converted several of my non-beer loving girlfriends with it. Yum!

  5. I think Aaron would LOVE that. I should tell him to make it for himself. :-) Not a beer drinker here, either, except for Leine's summer shandy. That is like juice beer and is excellent.

  6. Very cute! I have never hosted a beer tasting but my husband might enjoy it. I can't stand beer either so I'd be there trying to steal your sangria from you....

  8. Here in Rochester, we have a fabulous store called "Beers of the World." http://www.mybeersoftheworld.com/ It is in an old Wegmans location and it's basically like Disneyland for beer snobs and novices alike! :)

  9. Yeah, I don't drink beer. But I will come to your beer tastings and share your sangria. I love sangria.

  10. Cool idea. Spent five minutes trying to make a beer flight/airline pun. It isn't happening today. Wait, this project really took-off. No? Meh. They all can't be gems.

  11. This is awesome. Neither of us drink beer, but Nick has been known to host whisky flights.

  13. Joe is a beer guy, too. He and his roommates in college even brewed a few batches of beer together and I cannot even count how many brewery tours we've been on (spoiler: a lot).

  15. Ahh love it. I am also not a beer drinker. I am even worried that those straw-ber-rita's might have a beer after taste, I am not even enticed to try one. Plus dh makes the most insane Strawberry Margarita, so I don't need to try it :)

I love how fancy your beer testing with be.

  16. It is really fun to read that you are also in the "I am not cool enough to like beer. Don't touch my sangria" phase of beer drinking. I really am right there with you!!

  17. I prefer my cupcakes ;)
I hate that I don't like beer though, it's such a social thing, especially here!

  18. Nate sounds so much like my boyfriend when it comes to beer. And the Hyvee wine and spirits is the worst - I know he'll take a half hour to decide what beer to choose! That's when I browse the wine aisle :)

  19. that is too cool! but they would be empty fast here.

  20. What a creative hubby! I was never a beer drinker either until I realized that I could milk a beer longer than I could a cranberry and vodka, ha!

  21. We were to host beer tasting last weekend but I got sick. We picked up our only sold in Wisconsin beers and smuggled them across the border with such anticipation. We'll get around to it sometime this summer. Till then bring on a cupcake or two.

  22. I actually ordered a wine tasting flight at dinner the other night because we were at a wine bar (when in Rome right?). It was brought to the table on this obnoxious tiered tree of wine. It was so embarrassing.

I love that this is nice n simple. And low & semi-inconspicuous

  23. I love this even though I"m with you and think beer is gross. My husband loves different beers as well and will also take WAY too long shopping for them. I'm going to come over and drink your sangria with you, okay???

  24. lol, I know this is really nerdy. But Aaron is REALLY into micro-brewed root beer. It's probably the mormon in him coming out... but he would LOVE to have something like this for all his "tastings"

  25. I like cupcakes and beer...but not at the same time. I did however watch an episode of cupcake wars where the baker made them with beer.

  26. I prefer to consume calories both ways!(Cupcakes or beer)I have a recipe for guinness dark chocolate cupcakes with a bailys frosting...As weird as that sounds, super yummy! Anyway my husband would love the flight tray, what an awesome "dog" father's day idea.

  27. I love beer. And cupcakes. And this idea!

My husband is a big beer fan. We are always trying out different ones. My brother works at BevMo and brings us new ones to try.

    Such a great idea.
