Zombie Run

You’ll have to excuse my lack of DIY posts.  I’ve been busy.  Running from zombies.

I learned two things this week-end.  I might survive day 1 of a zombie apocalypse.  I probably wouldn’t survive day 2 because I wouldn’t be able to move.

Two of my favorite pharmacy school friends and I ran the Zombie Run this past Saturday.

The Zombie Run was a 5K Cross Country run with proceeds going to the Special Olympics.  Did I mention that I hadn’t ran since October?  It was also freezing cold and spitting snow.  Good work, Iowa.  Good work, silly blogger.

We started the race with 8 flags. The goal was to “survive” the race with at least one flag. If all of your flags were removed, you were infected with the zombie virus.

The race was on Credit Island.  It was a super gloomy day.  The island is creepy and full of old military buildings.  The setting was quite perfect for a zombie apocalypse. It has been raining for the past two weeks which made the entire course a giant puddle of mud.

Because running a cross country race through mud away from zombies wasn’t enough, they also added obstacles.  Like hay bales covered in plastic.

And plywood slides that were super hard to climb with muddy shoes.

Luckily the zombies left us alone on the obstacles but we were zombie fair game after we got off.

I made it to the last obstacle with two flags.  And then a zombie kid took both of them at the very end.  Note to self, avoid children during a zombie apocalypse.  Darn zombie kid.

Anna and I became zombies.

Megan was still a human but was nice enough to drive us home.

Are you into the zombie hype?  Do you think you’d survive an apocalypse? Who wants to bring me some ibuprofen for my sore muscles?

  1. This was fun and you look like you had a blast. I love "the walking dead" but I can't see myself running from them ;) LOL. The photos are awesome. How did you have the time to snap them all ;)

    1. Busted! Actually, we took most of them at the obstacles...where the zombies weren't allowed to get us.

  3. I've always wanted to be in shape enough to do one of these. But I'd probably get freaked out, hide under an obstacle and pee my pants. If we're being honest. ;)

  4. This looks way more fun than the zombie race Jeff did last year, which just involved half of the runners dressing up in Halloween costumes (think witch in tutu and knee high green socks, not zombie makeup), and the course being so poorly plotted that they ended up running like 2 miles longer than necessary. Fun times! Your race looks way better. Maybe he'll fly out to do it with you next year ;-)

  6. So funny story - when Joe and I started dating, he was always talking about zombies (ie he and his friends would say things like "that hill would be perfect in case of a zombie apocalypse"). It got to the point where I would dream about zombie attacks but they were never scary - I was totally calm and prepared during the dreams.

This race looks like a ton of fun! I wish we had something like that near us (although, to be fair, I probably wouldn't run).

  9. That is such a fun idea. I'd probably get really freaked out by it though. I was just telling Andy that I would probably not survive anything, ever. I would just decide "eh, it's not worth it," and give up.

  14. Woah! I'm really digging the template/theme of this website. It's simple, yet effective.
A lot of times it's challenging to get that "perfect balance" between superb usability and visual appeal. I must say you've done a excellent job with this.
In addition, the blog loads super quick for me on Opera.
    Excellent Blog!

  17. Haha, what a brilliant idea, and for such a good cause too. In the U.K., there is an annual 'Zombie Walk' day, where everyone dresses up as zombies, and then as a pack crawl through town in character. It's pretty fun!
Anyway, really enjoyed this post, and your other cool DIY and craft posts here! I work for a new social blogging site called glipho.com, and was just wondering if you would consider sharing your posts there with us? It wouldn't affect this existing blog in any way, and I know our community would love to read through your work here. Let me know if you are interested!

    All the best,

    Teo

  20. bahaha I want to be the person who steals flags. They probably don't run but ride around on a scooter or something, right? I hope. You do a great zombie impression.
