Spring and The Home Depot Garden Club

Spring?  Spring? Where are you?  Oh, that’s right.  You are never going to arrive in Iowa.  Silly me.

The local weather reporters are entertaining us with talk of temperatures in the 80’s by the middle of the month. What a great April Fool’s joke silly weather people!

The talk of 80 degrees has me pondering the outdoors.

Spring Before 2013 Outside Before

A yard full of green grass.  Dirt on my hands.  Flowers blooming.  I. Can’t. Wait.

I know that I need to be patient and do some planning before any of that can happen.  I’m horrible at planning ahead.  I like to dive right in. I recently became a member of the Home Depot's Garden Club. The Garden Club has some great benefits. By signing up I can save $5 off my next garden purchase of $50.  They will also send me lots of e-mail coupons, garden ideas and info on new products.

One of my favorite features of the Home Depot's Garden Club is the regional to-do list.  You select the zone you live in and you are supplied with a monthly outdoor to-do list. I love checking things off of lists.  It’s a sickness! We live in Zone 5 and part of our March to-do list includes pruning woody plants.  Our little shrubs are getting out of control after 4 years of growth.  Better get on that!

Do you think removing Christmas lights should be part of the outdoor to-do list?  Nah, me neither.

We have lots of projects that we need to tackle outdoors this Spring.  We have multiple areas that still need flowers.  The Garden Center will be an excellent resource for finding plants that grow well in our zone.  We need assistance finding plants for a shady area and a partly sunny area.  We also have deer that live in our backyard that like to eat our plants.  We have to be selective with the plants that we purchase.  I’m all about wildlife living in my backyard but I’m not all about feeding them gourmet meals with my hard earned money.

Our back patio is quite sad.  We need color.  We need hanging baskets.  We need help.  (Extra points if you spot a doggy in the window.)

  2. We feed the wildlife gourmet meals with our hard earned money. Except instead of deer the "wildlife" is our dogs. Fail.

  4. We are supposed to reach 60 today! Woo hoo! Of course, I just flew home from the Caribbean on Saturday so 60 seems cold to me! But I am looking forward to spring weather in NJ and I can't wait to see what you do with your outside area!

  6. 31 right now but it was almost 60 yesterday! I am so ready for spring! I need big help with planting and gardening. This summer with a pregnant belly probably isn't the time to learn though. (That's a good excuse for having an ugly outside, right?) :P

  7. I want to sing "How much is that doggy in the window" now. haha

We have SO much work to do in our yard, too, but since it's our first Spring in the house we are clueless. Kind of like the couple in that Home Depot commercial. ;)
Thanks for the link for the coupon!

Next Sunday Bob and his dad are going to do a bunch of tree and bush trimming with chainsaws. I will be staying away from the windows so I won't be freaking out about them being on ladders with cutting tools. yikes.

  8. Very nice! We were scoping out some boxwoods at Home Depot yesterday, as a matter of fact. We'll need to do some yard work at the new digs. Ohhhhh yes we will.

  9. I have so many plans for our garden this year! I've definitely already spent close to $300 on new flowers!

Spring is just around the corner and I can't wait to see everything in bloom!!

  11. Ooooh! Exciting! I've been doing a bit of yard work here and there when the weather is nice, but I really need to get a move on! We want a garden this year, so we need to do that before we hit summer ;)

  12. Oh I can't wait to see what you come up with for that challenge. I see a number of blogs I follow is participating.

I am in full swing getting my own patio ready for summer. We moved some sprinklers, poured some more concrete and made a rock/ boxwood flower bed. Next up is a bit more painting before we get to the fun part of decorating.

  13. I attempted to comment this morning, but my iPhone decided I'm not allowed to comment on your blog. Ever.

Anyway,I can't wait to see what you guys whip up in your yard! Mr. FSL thinks our yard is his turf and inside is mine. Well this year I want hydrangeas and/or peonies. He votes no on any plant involving color. I'll probably end up posting about a domestic dispute involving this matter.

  15. We definitely will be doing some outdoor work this year. We came a long way from when we bought our place, but we couldn't tackle everything in a single year. So we'll add some more color with plants and flowers, and go from there! I can't wait to be able to work outside and have everything bloom. Come onnnnn, spring!

  20. I'm over this cold, crappy weather. Doesn't mother nature know that we have spray painting to do? Looking forward to see how you spruce up your landscaping.

  21. 80's this month?? I'm jealous.
I think we need to check out this Home Depot stuff. We spend tons of money there as it is, and $5 off $50 sounds good! Thanks for posting about this!

  22. I really like the idea of a regional to-do list! This is our first time ever having a yard, so we have NO idea what we're doing. We want to do a garden and all, but no clue where to start. I'll check this out!

  23. I always think I'm going to do all kinds of outdoor projects. And then I blog instead.

But seriously, I've got a self-imposed outdoor deadline of May 30 - Henry's birthday party. I'd mostly like our yard to not look embarrassing. We have a ways to go.

  24. Also, it sort of looks like a chair convention going on under your deck. What are the yellow and white chairs? They look cute.

  25. I can't wait to see what you do! When you're done with your yard, wanna road trip it out here to help me with mine? You can bring Home Depot along too if you'd like ;)

  27. Before using Viagra one should not take Farmacia On Line.
It is very important as it can cause long lasting damage to sexual potency.

  31. It was 19 here this morning....I can't wait for it to finally warm up so I can start doing some yard work. You have such a beautiful home and yard!

  32. I need Home Depot to send my husband a "how to" list for gardening, ha! His idea of yardwork is mowing the lawn and being done with it. I had to explain to him that we actually need to use the edger we have and mulch the flowerbeds and prune the shrubs, etc. Men!

  33. beautiful home! I recently added an outdoor fountain in my yard and it really made it complete.

  34. Wow, you have a lot of windows in your house. Well, it's wonderful! They simply remind me of English houses. Oh, and yes, I spotted your dog. After seeing him, I automatically thought of the children’s song: “How much is that doggie in the window” Haha!
