Homemade Dog Biscuits

I swear I haven’t lost my marbles.  Well, I don’t think I have.

I’m now making my dog homemade dog treats.  And then photographing them with Kraft paper and Baker’s twine.

Homemade Dog Biscuits

Ok, fine.  I have lost it.

But look at that cute face.  You’d make him his favorite homemade dog treats as too.  And you’d probably wrap them in Baker’s twine.  Don’t lie.

Wire Fox Terrier

Ike’s aunt made him these dog treats for Christmas.  He’s been begging for the recipe ever since.  I get a little nervous with homemade treats because Ike has a pretty sensitive stomach. He LOVES these treats and tolerates them well.

Homemade Dog Biscuits

Ingredients

  • 1 1/4 cup flour
  • 1/2 cup Old Fashioned oats
  • 1/2 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 cup creamy peanut butter
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 2 tablespoons applesauce

Directions

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In a medium bowl, mix together all of the dry ingredients. Add the wet ingredients. Mix thoroughly. Place the dough onto a piece of wax paper and then add another sheet on top. Roll the dough out so that it is about a 1/4 –1/2 inch thick. Remove the top layer of wax paper and use a cookie cutter to cut out shapes. Use a spatula to help remove your shapes to a cookie sheet for baking. Continue reforming and rolling the dough until it is all used. Bake for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown. Allow to cool and serve.

Homemade Peanut Butter Dog Treats

Homemade Dog Biscuits for a Wire Fox Terrier

He keeps following me around wanting more dog cookies.  I’ve created a monster.

Have I officially lost it?  Do you make your dog treats?

I randomly posted on Saturday about a flower display I made.  I kind of like it so be sure to check it out if you missed it….right here!

  1. I've made my dogs treats before and they love it! I'll use seasonal cookie cutters around the holidays too.

  2. I make frozen puppy pops in the summer -- blend together a banana, a Tbs or so of peanut butter and a little water (enough to thin the mixture until it's pour-able). Then pour the mix into those little plastic to-go cups that are typically used for dressing when you order a take-out salad. Pop on the lid and freeze! It's a great way for our dog Charlie to cool down after a long summer walk. And bonus: he holds the cup between his paws, which is super-cute.

  3. What a fun thing to make! I've always been nervous about making dog treats but it's good to know that these are okay for dogs who have sensitive stomachs.

  4. Pretty sure I'd eat those...

  5. DUDE. I want to make these. Did you try one? Be honest. I feel like those would be edible. Pretty sure my dogs would think they're edible. Now I need to find a dog bone cookie cutter, because.....duh.

  6. I have a cookbook of dog treats that I use occasionally. I also make homemade wet dog food to mix into their kibble. I also freeze banana slices for treats. When your dog is your "kid," why not?

  7. Ike is so cute; he looks like a stuffed animal ;) I have never made Stewie treats...I know, I'm a bad mom.

  8. Hah, you don't read enough dog blogs if you think this makes you crazy! Try checking out the blog Kol's Notes. They even host a Tasty Tuesday blog hop every week with super tasty homemade dog treat recipes!

  9. Hey, if you're going to go to all the trouble of making your dog treats, you really OUGHT to break out the baker's twine and take a picture before all your hard work is in your dog's stomach!

  10. I've been meaning to! I even bought a bone shaped cookie cutter!

  11. You make me want to have a dog SO BADLY - I know he'd be my best friend and partner in crime and I even have the type and name all picked out - Baxter the Chocolate Labrador - unfortunately I have an exceedingly uncooperative husband who doesn't want one. I even sponsored a chocolate Labrador assistance dog (called Baxter, it was all very spooky at the time) and we get monthly updates but it still won't sway Mr Misery Pants...

  14. I have definitely made some treats a few times. Jixer has a really sensitive stomach too so I have to be careful about what we feed her. I like making them because then I know what's in them. I haven't wrapped them in baker's twine before though... These look great! That photo of Ike looking down at one is hilarious!

  15. Sell these on Etsy. I will buy 50 million for Indy and Buster. They do not have a good mother who will make them treats. Also, I don't have any flour or oats in my house. Boo.

  16. We make Franco and Lola's treats. And by we, I mean Ryan. Although we slice them up super tiny before baking (with a pizza slicer) and they are so cheap and last forever. And the dogs are obsessed with them. I have been meaning to post about them. For about 6 months. Ha! You totally beat me to it.

  17. Also - I love that you wrapped them in baker's paper and twine. Hilarious.

Now getting sewing. If you have time for this, you have time to make totes. ;)

  18. We've been wanting to make some homemade dog treats for a while now and these seem like they're easy peasy! Maybe I'll end up making some this week :)

  19. Prettiest dog treats ever. I'd wrap them in bakers twine too!

  20. No, you have not lost it...yet ;) I would so make these in a heart beat, both of my dogs have super sensitive stomachs, and every single time I've left them boarded, they end up sick, because of the treats they give them. I have noticed they take quite well with treats that have peanut butter, so I will be making these bad boys. Now, I just need to find some cute bone cookie cutters.

  21. My SIL has made these for our dog before. He absolutely loved them!

  22. Yup, I totally bake my dog her own biscuits. She's a bulldog with a sensitive tummy, so I usually use rice flour and lots and lots of peanut butter. Sometimes I forgo the bone-shaped cutter and roll/squish them with a fork so they resemble tiny little peanut butter cookies. Um. Maybe *I've* lost it, too?

  23. Love it!
We don't give my dog treats. He came from a shelter and when we got him he was emaciated, so any time even a drop of food is left lying around he'll climb on the furniture and eat it like he's never going to see food again. That includes cat food, rabbit food or rabbit droppings. It used to be cat litter, too, until we put a baby gate up to keep him away from the litter box... So he's now a bit over weight. We stopped buying treats and now we give him raw baby carrots instead. It's much healthier and honestly he's more excited when he hears the refrigerator open than he ever was when he heard the pet food cabinet open.

  24. Pretty sure that I've gone crazy because I want to eat your dog treats myself. They sound like delicious crispy cookies!

  25. I've never made my dogs their own treats. I love the way you presented them with the twine. My dogs love the peanut butter treats from Trader Joe's. We also give them carrots, apples and sweet baked potato chips.

  26. Maybe! I've gone a bit crazy too then! I love the homemade treats for my 2 dogs and they seem to enjoy them too! :-) I have never tried making them myself, my mom prepares the treats for them! Ike, looks adorable in those pictures! :-)

  27. I don't make my dog treats, I make his food.

  28. Willis only likes one brand of dog treats. He won't even eat the homemade kind...picky dog. You better make sure Ike knows how lucky he is to have you for his mommy!!

  29. NO, YOU HAVE NOT LOST it because this is awesome. They deserve the best and I just said yesterday that seeing my pets faces make me forget about all the horrible things in this world. Don't you think so? They are so innocent and sweet and they should get treated with homemade cookies all the time :)

  30. I'll have to try this! We haven't made any treats for Dud man yet, but he does get preservative free treats from our local farmer's market!

  31. ike is the cutest ever, he deserve to be treated with your dog treats :)

    ReplyDelete
  32. Oh that Ike! You need to show him pictures of poor mangy orphan dogs so he keeps the right perspective. I feel like he's getting really out of touch with dog-reality lately.
