Rubbermaid LunchBlox Sandwich Kit Review

Can I tell you how much I love products with clever names?  Well, I do.  Like Rubbermaid's LunchBlox Sandwich Kit.  Blox.  Clever.

On Sunday, I mentioned that we are going to start seriously meal planning.  Nate and I both pack a lunch and a bonus of meal planning is lunch that isn’t a frozen dinner.  Frozen dinners. Bleck.  Packing a lunch, however, can get old easily.  The same stuff over and over.  The whole having to plan ahead so you don’t end up eating granola bars and Skittles from the vending machine.

Luckily for me, the kind folks at Rubbermaid sent me their LunchBlox Kit to test out.  The kit contains containers that are perfectly portioned for lunch foods.  Cute little portion containers with pretty green lids.  Pretty is important for me and lunch..and life.   The kit also contains a handy Blue Ice pack.  I have easy access to a fridge at work but I might (key word, might) let Nate borrow this fancy little kit during tax season when he’s out auditing away.  Maybe.  Probably not.

We switched to glass containers for our lunch needs a year or two ago.  The BPA thing freaked me out and the plastic never seemed to get clean.  The containers in this kit are BPA-free and also microwave, dishwasher, and freezer safe.  Phew.

I decided to test this kit out for the first time with Sunday’s leftovers… Crockpot Spaghetti Sauce.  Mmm, spaghetti.  I also packed some yogurt, cherries, and almonds.  All of this together in a cute little containers that snap together and slide right into my lunch bag.  It felt so good to have my lunch all planned out and put together for the day.

One of my biggest problems with packing a lunch is the fact that I leave the leftover food in the container. I get sad the next morning when open my lunch box and decide to just to grab a new container and let stuff grow in the old one.  I’m a responsible adult.  I have now banned myself to this little kit which I must clean and take care of daily…like a precious little lunch box pet.

I didn’t heat the spaghetti in this container because I was afraid of it staining.  Just storing the spaghetti sauce in it overnight made it difficult to clean so I will keep this for sandwich/non-staining items only.  The sauce can live in the glass containers.  Sauce grows the coolest stuff when I forget to wash it anyways.  I love science experiments.

You can find this lovely contraption over at Rubbermaid’s site…click here.  (They have a coupon for $1.50 off!) It can also be found at places like Target, K-Mart, and select Wal-Mart stores. You can get more info on other fun Rubbermaid products by following them on the Twitter and the facebook.

I received no monetary compensation for this post. I did, however, receive this pretty little LunchBlox kit for review.  All thoughts/opinions/crazy ideas are completely my own.

Are you a lunch packer?  What’s your favorite lunch food?  Anyone else guilty of letting things grow in their lunch box because they are too lazy to clean them?  Tell me I’m not alone!

  1. I work 12-hour night shifts, so I am most definitely a lunch packer! My favorite sandwich at the moment is a variation on good old PB&J, with strawberry jelly and banana slices on the sandwich. I must admit that I'm really bad about not washing out my containers too--there's a divided plate in my car right now that's growing some weird mold.

  2. I love having leftovers for lunch. They make the best lunches. (Ew to deli meat.) We also switched to mostly glass containers a while ago because plastic in the microwave freaked me out, as did BPA. I still won't put any plastic in the microwave even if it says microwave-safe because I've heard that simply means it won't melt. (I take a plate with me for reheating.) Who knows if that's true.

Love that the set has a little ice pack that fits with it!!

  3. Suggestion on the staining of plastic ware concerning spaghetti sauce. If you spray it with Pam before you place the spaghetti in then it won't stain the container.

  4. I freaked out over that whole BPA thing when we were registering for our wedding and chose glass over plastic for everything. I don't even like microwaving my food in plastic containers, even if they are BPA-free. I do like that there are little different sized containers for this - it could make it easier carrying lunch to work!

  5. I'm definitely a lunch packer. We both are, so we go through ridiculous amounts of little containers every week. I think the husband sells them on the black market at his office or something, because I swear only half the containers he takes come back home with him. I love how that kit all snaps together nicely! I have issues getting all my little containers to fit in my lunch bag. Well, I have issues in general, let's be real.

  6. That's such a great idea and so organized. I use zip lock bags for all my snacks and stick them in a plastic grocery bag with my frozen dinner. Not so organized.

  7. That is so cute! It reminds me of the bento boxes that I use for my husband's lunch (which, incidentally, are probably too cutesy to make him take to work)! I think I will look into this as a more manly lunch accessory. I think he'd like it!

  8. Man, I'm not that fancy when it comes to packing my lunch! It's a sandwich in a ziplock bag, a small bag of chips and a can of coke - usually just thrown in a brown paper bag or something. haha.
If i were a fancy lunch-packer, I would totally get this though. It's so organized and cute!

  9. Best trick I ever learned: spaghetti sauce will come right off of plastic containers using COLD water and soap. If you use hot water, you're basically setting the stain in the plastic. Once the sauce comes off with the cold water/soap mix, then feel free to use hot water.

I'm the worst when it comes to leftovers. I always have the best intentions but usually end up with a moldy container and a mound of smooshy green stuff. . . yum.

  10. I will be a lunch packer soon! right now I can go home for lunch, which is where i am now, but when the moving day finally comes it will a tad too far for lunch at home, so i will be packing my lunch, maybe in a lunch blox?

  11. I really hate having to buy a lunch most every day, but I also hate when I pack a lunch and I have a bunch of containers taking up a ton of space and bopping all over the place in my bag. This would be great if it all stays together! Might have to try this!
And sauce totally grows the weirdest stuff!

  14. This looks like so much fun! I want one. I wonder if my husband's coworkers would make fun of him if I got him one too? Haha :)
