Flag Cake Awesomeness

Dude.  Where’d the week-end go?  Holy cow.

I say “dude” way more than anyone of my age and education level should.

Dude. Have you seen that Flag Cake floating around on Pinterest?

Yeah, I made it.

And I watermarked that photo.  I don’t want anyone stealing my stuff.

It started out pretty decent.

Pretty!

We’re killing this flag cake thing.  Boo-yah.

Uh oh. Should have greased that blue cake pan a little better.

God bless America.

Where’d we go wrong?  We didn’t level the cake layers enough and the frosting was too runny. And we were trying to cook a delicious supper and didn’t give this cake our undivided attention.  It’s obviously a needy one. You win some.  You lose some.  Luckily the in-laws are good sports and laughed at us with us.

Part of the inside was pretty though!

If you would like to attempt to make your own disaster, you can find some decent instructions at Glorious Treats.

Are you whipping up anything good for the ol’ 4th of July?  Any other great cakes I should attempt next?

  1. I made that bad boy for Memorial Day (you can see it here) and it definitely demanded a lot of attention. Totally worth it, though.

    Now I'm hungry for cake.

  2. I saw the photos on Instagram and was looking forward to hearing the story :)
I really do think it looks OK from the inside?! Happy 4th!

  4. Haha - that is how most of my interest projects turn out, looking nothing like the original photo! Even tho its messy, it still looks tasty!

  5. Like I said, I'm sure it tasted delicious.

To test the consistency of your icing (assuming it's buttercream), gently tap the icing with your finger, if it forms a slight peak with only a little bit of icing sticking to your finger, it's good to go. That's 10 years of 4-H cake decorating experience right there.

  6. I made that cake last year for the 4th, and it turned out great! It was a big hit. But it definitely got my undivided attention. Oh well. At least it tasted good!

  7. Love it - seriously! This post made me smile. :-) I bet it tasted good, right?

  10. I LOVE to bake but those cakes that involve cutting apart layers always intimidate me big time. There are so many cute flag-inspired recipes for the 4th, but I'm thinking about trying something I saw online (sadly, can't even remember where but I'm figuring I can wing it) where you cut bananas, stuff them with tasty things and then wrap them in foil and throw them on the grill.

And because I've just been in the mood for barbecue lately, I made this last week:
    Slow Cooker Pulled Barbecue Chicken
    http://www.examiner.com/article/simple-summer-recipe-slow-cooker-pulled-barbecue-chicken
So easy, so good. And it also makes awesome Barbecue Chicken Pizza with the leftovers. I find the best recipes are those that can also be used for pizza. :-)

  11. Just think, if it had come out perfectly then you would have had just another "look how perfect my pinterest cake is" blog post.
Now you have an actual little story to tell ;)

Besides, no one could question that the cake was home made now!

  12. I did a rainbow layer cake back in March for my little sister's birthday. Pretty much turned out the same - layers fell apart, icing ran everywhere, etc. But if it tastes good, who cares, right?
I once tried to make a red, white and blue layer cake but the coloring was too light so it was pink, white and baby blue. I've wanted to try again but just never get around to it in time. Maybe this year will be the one that I try and get it right.

  13. Yeah, you went wrong with the part that required MORE THAN ONE LAYER OF CAKE. I max out at layer one. Well, max out at making. I'll eat any number of layers of cake.

Speaking of which, that still looks delicious. Glad you enjoyed it anyway. : )

  18. You are too funny! Thanks to all your pinterest posts, I am making red, white, and blue layer cupcakes tomorrow :o) I thought about doing a checkerboard cake instead (and still might since it's too hot to do anything else...). Maybe I'll finally get around to that tutorial one of these days.

  19. No oven at the moment (or kitchen for that matter) so no baking for me. That said, your cake is sort of lovable all melty-like

  20. OK so I'll grant that the first picture wasn't awesome, but it looks like the slices probably turned out pretty good! Based on that last picture, it definitely had the effect. You're more adventurous than me. I have looked at that cake but never attempted it.

  21. I attempted the red, white and blue marbled fudge, it didn't go as planned either. But I'm determined to give it one more go.

  22. I happen to dig gooey so I'd probably eat it dude.

  23. Hahaha You are too funny. I'm sorry the cake didn't look like your inspiration picture, but I'm sure it tasted even better. Happy 4th of July from one of your Canadian followers!

  29. My hubby made a cake a few years ago to "celebrate" a negative milestone, and he was a tad impatient in taking it out of the cake pans and icing it too soon... so we lovingly labeled it the "fail cake," complete with fail cake lettering. Even if it was ugly, it was still super tasty (butter pecan cake with vanilla icing... mmmm).

Your fail just means you have to make another cake. Darn!
