Gettin’ Spicy With It

Warning:  Life changing post ahead.

Say “hello” to my messy cupboard.  (Please channel your inner Scarface.)

This cupboard kept making me sad.  I couldn’t find anything.  Stuff would attack me when I opened the doors.  I kept buying things that I didn’t need.  I couldn’t reach my sprinkles. It’s a sad day when you can’t reach your sprinkles.

I decided to take matters into my own hands.  Because, honestly, who else was going to fix this hot mess?  Nate?  Ike?  Yeah, I took matters into my own hands.

I purchased some super fancy bamboo turntables from Wal-Mart.  (Side note:  I went into Wal-Mart for turntables and windshield washer fluid.  I came out with only turntables and windshield washer fluid.  Miracles do happen.)

The spices are now organized alphabetically.  The extracts are located together.  Most importantly, I can reach my sprinkles.  Can I get a hallelujah?

We still have quite a few bottles of liquids that make the cupboard look a little more cluttered than I would like.  (I should have removed them for the blog photos but I like to keep it real while gettin’ spicy with it.)  The liquids are now organized and I can see what I have.  Note to self:  do not buy Karo syrup.  I keep thinking about starting an emergency preparedness kit.  I sure hope Karo syrup is on the list because I have an amazing head start on that one.

I may be the most unorganized organized person that I know.

Nate informs me that there is no way he is going to put spices back in alphabetical order.  I think he will come to love the alphabetized spices and he will want to make sure they continue to stay that way.  That’s how it works with husbands, right?

He also wanted to know why I needed to replace the one turntable we owned with a matching bamboo one.  He wanted to know if I didn’t have a blog would I replace it.  I answered yes and yes and I hope you don’t wake up on the wrong side of the universe again tomorrow.  Little things like pretty and organized spice cabinets make life so wonderful.

Life would be even more wonderful if all of our spices were in little glass jars. Hmmm…

Any life changing organizational tips to share?  Can you make it out of Wal-Mart with only the items on your list?

  1. Know what's funny? I have that exact turnable from Walmart and it's not even put together yet. Yep. Sitting in my closet for the past year and a half. I guess it's time to put that sucker together and pop it in my cabinet. I can't see my sprinkles either! Lol!

  2. Looking good! I have the tered step type spice organizer, and I have a love hate relationship with it. All of mine are alphabetical also AND WILL STAY THAT WAY. :)

  3. alphabetical...wow, you are officially nuts! All the power to you, but there is no way we would be able to keep our spice cabinet like that for more than a day! Matching white jars though, i can get on board with that and have been contemplating something like that. Although without alphabetizing, matching jars could make certain spices VERY difficult to find if they all looked alike!

and yes, walmart scares me, so i pretty much run through to the item i need and then get the heck out of there as soon as possible...

  7. You go! It's amazing how much better I feel after organization projects. But they always lead to more - are you going to go with the clear spice containers? It's a slippery slope!! I say no and call it a day. :)

  8. I had a cinnamon incident last week and should have done this myself.

Looks good and nobody puts sprinkles in the corner.

  9. No joke, I found 2 containers of oregano, an empty container of bay leaves, and an expired soy sauce in my cabinet the other day. I should have taken everything out and started got down to business...but I shut the door and walked calmly out of the kitchen. ;)

  11. If you were disorganized before, this is sure to make your life easier - and your husband's too, and he will appreciate it. I am working my way toward clear glass jars for spices and have researched them everywhere possible. I might end up purchasing them from a wholesaler - not too many though - enough for my needs. Mine are in a deep drawer and the lids need labeling.

  12. Your cabinet looks almost exactly like mine. I take a lot of teasing for my alphabetized spices, but it sure makes cooking easier! Great post!

  13. Love those bamboo turntables! It feels good to organize. I use those cheap wooden clothespins as chip clips. That way I have a ton of them just waiting to be used!

  14. All my spices are in a basket and its a complete mess. I agree little clear containers with little labels sounds like the next step :)

  15. It looks much more organized and accessible now!
My husband loves to cook so we have a huge mess of spices in our cabinet. In the past I have found multiple empty bottles and who knows how many unopened and half-gone jars of the same type up there. I need to get a rotating table like yours so we can actually see what is going on up there.

  17. If I get brave enough, I may venture into Wal Mart. This looks great and I'm sure makes you happy!

  18. Can you write a separate tutorial on how to leave walmart with only a couple of items?

And then can you come do this same thing to my pantry? Seriously, I have a list of things I wanted to do before the baby is born, and the only thing remaining on it is to organize the pantry and freezer. It's been the only thing on the list for a week. Still not started.

  19. The cabinet looks great!

And I think there's something in the automated doors at Walmart that zaps your brain into thinking of at least three more things you need or at least need to look at when you enter the store. I'm glad you were able to escape its evil clutches. :)

  20. Love this! And I think husbands should just step on board the alphabetized spice train and live with it! :)

  21. I think the "nobody puts sprinkles in the corner" comment should get an award. Awesome. As is your new spice cupboard. I keep my alphabetical too, but in a drawer near the oven so they are easy to access.

  22. I have my spices alphabetized, too. You aren't crazy. It's so much more convenient.
