Before, Progress, Plans

Last week I shared with you my brother’s living room progress.  We also finished painting a few other rooms. Like the kitchen.  The fiesta kitchen.  Who wants burritos?

We had some focus issues while painting.  There were just so many hideous colors to hide.  I started priming the kitchen.  My dad asked me if we should finish a room before beginning another.  I told him this room was making me so violently ill that it could not wait.

I had some trouble with exposure compensation (I need a refresher on our long lost camera lessons) but this is the most accurate representation of the colors.

Oh my. Oh my.  Hurry.  Cover up this awfulness.

And yes, I do occasionally get more paint on the walls than my clothes. Occasionally.

My brother loves painting ceilings.  That’s why we let him do all of them.  We’re a supportive family.

He chose Comfort Grey for Sherwin Williams for the wall color.  It’s a very interesting color.  It’s sometimes green and sometimes grey.  We both liked it a lot.

This was the last room that we finished before I called it a week-end and head back home.  It’s obviously not picked up/taped removed but you can see there is definite improvement.

My family may also be the messiest renovators.  I had a panic attack when I arrived and moved/organized everything into the dining room.  All of the supplies grouped by use.  My family made a lot of fun of me.  Deep down they liked the new system.  I’m sure it’s still in place….

The cabinets obviously need some love.  We are going to be giving them a make-over Memorial Day week-end….because we are the most amazing sister/brother-in-law in the world.  He will repeat this to us during the three day week-end.  And feed us ice cream.

Nate is going to add some moldings to the cabinets.  They will then be painted. Probably white.  I think we have him talked into new hardware as well.  There may also be some countertop painting.  You just never know.

Who wants burritos?  What’s the worst color combo you have seen in a house?  Are you an organized DIY’er or do you have things strung from one room to another?

  4. My goodness - that's a lot of color in there! Thinking about one of the rooms in our apartment looking like that makes me feel sick. I could also be feeling sick because it's Monday, but I think it's because of the walls. SO glad you repainted in there. It looks a billion times better!

  6. Great color! I still can't believe the ceilings were painted those lovely colors.

Are you using the Cabinet Transformation kit this time? I would use it again if I needed to! And I heard that countertop painting is a pain in the you know what. He could get decent laminate counters (I know that is taboo in decor land, but it's really affordable and easy to install) at Menards.

  7. When you said fiesta kitchen I was excited because it makes me think of fiesta ware....which i LOVE. But that...is just ugh no.

WHY PEOPLE! It looks so much better with the color you guys chose. Can't wait to see what you have in mind for the cabinets, they remind me of our last rental house.

  8. My first house had mauve, mauve, mauve everywhere. With mauve carpets. I still get a little nauseous when I think about it! The kitchen is much improved and I'm looking forward to seeing the progress. :)

  9. Wow, what a change. What on earth were the previous owners thinking I wonder? My in-laws currently live in a house were the kitchen and family room have black ceiling, talk about feeling caved in.

  10. Wow, looks so much better. You better check that freezer before painting Memorial Day Weekend to be sure he stocked up for you guys! What a great sister/bro-in-law. Does he do side jobs for ceiling painting? Because we all hate ceiling painting. Is he going to install molding and trim on the walls also?

  11. The new color looks really good. And ties nicely with the woodwork and tones it down a bit. Also, I have never met anyone who likes painting ceilings. Is there something wrong with your brother? ;)

  12. Oh wow. I mean, what are people thinking?! When we bought our house, one of the guest rooms was painted top to bottom in a pastoral scene. There were birds, flowers, bugs (hundreds....I kid you not), and frogs. It was criminal.

  15. HUGE improvement! People's taste just boggles my mind sometimes. We have marble green countertops and they had mustard yellow walls (very close to the color of the ceiling). It was HIDEOUS. it was the first thing to go. Alas, I still have the horrible countertops, but that's something that I will be taking care of in the near future. WOOT WOOT

  16. It's amazing what a little paint can do to a room...looks much better!

I haven't seen too many crazy interior paint combos, but in San Francisco there are some INTERESTING exterior paint colors let me tell you. We're talking hot pink with turquoise trim and Tang orange with puke brown..it's..an eyeful.

  17. That looks awesome! Can't wait to see the cabinets!

We were pretty blessed that a lot of our house was painted in normal colors. Except the guest bath and one of the bedrooms. I don't know why anyone would want the neon lime green on their walls. And green is my favorite color, but not this green....

  18. You are totally the best sister ever. Although I'm guessing you helped paint for your own benefit as much as his:) How would you have be able to visit if you had to look at those awful yellow walls and ceiling?

  19. The paint made such a difference. I can't wait for the Memorial Day makeover. I have been contemplating adding trim to my kitchen cabinets for a while, I even wrote a post about it http://a-can-do-attitude.blogspot.com/2012/03/cabinet-plastic-surgery-little-nip-and.html. Once you do your makeover :) are the guinea pigs it will probably be the kick in the pants I need to get in gear. Great work so far.

  20. Our new house had burnt orange and maroon walls in the kitchen....I win, right? We got rid of that eyesore, and are slowly adding color in a good way. One of the projects on my dream list is to add molding to my kitchen island, so I can't wait to see what you do with those cabinets!

  21. Looks so much better. Want to come to my house and help me paint? Bring your brother for the ceilings.

  22. OMG who are the people who choose paint colors like those?! Craziness. They should be locked up. And then counseled by you, because that is SUCH an improvement!

  23. A lot of progress has been made - quite a change. But I do love burritos!

  24. Yikes!!! You wonder what people are thinking sometimes. You should have seen the kitchen in our first house. 1970's fruit wallpaper. I couldn't move out fast enough. We knew we were going to build so we never bothered ripping it down. I always wonder if it's been put out of its misery yet.

You did an amazing job, what a difference!

  25. When Ryan and I moved into our place a few months ago the kitchen was lavender with a dark purple under the chair rail (matched beautifully with the avocado sink), the kitchen was neon peach and the master bath was dark scary teal (also matched beautifully with the cat-urine yellow everything else).

We should have had virtual painting parties together hahaha
