Blonde Going Grey

Remember this Blonde dresser…

29th Birthday 051

It went grey…

Olympic’s Zero VOC Mountaintop and Silver Charm to be exact.  I really like the Zero VOC for painting furniture.  The paint doesn’t smell…which is nice when you are putting the dresser in a bedroom…or when you are painting with some kind of viral infection that has taken over your lungs...(On a side note, when a Lowe’s employee tries to tell you that Valspar paint is low VOC and doesn’t really have a smell….don’t believe her.  It’s one of the strongest smelling paints.  Lesson learned.)

It always takes me a little bit to get used to something new living in our house.  It always feels like a stranger has moved in with us…but it’s growing on me.  I am, however, not completely sold on the top drawer handles.  I don’t love them but I don’t hate them.  I’m giving them some time.

It’s hard changing from a matchy-matchy decorating style to a more eclectic style.  I know it’s still a little matchy being grey and all but I still feel like it doesn’t “match”…baby steps.

I had considered maybe a green or a plum but that’s just not really our style…and that’s ok.  Not everyone can be bold and daring.

Now to figure out what to add to the top of the dresser.  We are pretty minimalist people and don’t have a lot of “stuff” which means I will need to purchase some things.  I’m thinking a lamp, a fan, and maybe some frames.  Luckily I am indecisive...which will allow the paint to fully dry before I place anything on it.

What are your thoughts?  What do you think of the handles? When will my West Elm curtains arrive so I can "finish" this room???  So many unanswered questions!

  1. You did a great job on the dresser. I like the gray color and the drawer pulls really update the piece. Question for you....what color are the walls in your bedroom? My son's bedroom is in dire need of an update before he gets home from college this summer and he wants a blue/gray color. That looks like a great color in your room. Thanks for your help!

  6. Dad wants to know if you save the original handles?

  7. I did save the handles! I'm slightly nervous why you are asking...

Isn't it cute that my parents read my blog?

  8. First, I love that your parents read and comment on your blog. (My momma is my biggest blog fan. Well, her and my poor college roommate who is infuriated when I don't post on Fridays. How dare I?)

Second, I like the dresser! I like the color you chose. I'm so like you - it's hard for me to get away from matchy matchy. And I have such a difficult time painting furniture any color besides white and black. ;) Someday. I have a dream of a bright colored dresser-turned-buffet in our dining room. I'm on the search. I'm thinking bright yellow or turquoise. So, if you see one on Craigslist, send it my way. ;)

PS - I cannot make any promises that I won't buy every good-looking lamp from TJ Maxx.

PPS - I'm thinking a spring junking trip is in order. I'm thinking of recruiting a few other QC-area bloggers. You in?

  11. You have officially inspired me friend. I bought myself an old rocking chair off of Craigslist yesterday and I will be refinishing it. It's half sanded already so I haven't quite decided if I will be painting it or re-staining it. I have to do some research. I'll keep you updated. Keep up the blog!

  14. I love the transformation. It's kind of retro but chic! I want to do my guest room in grays, but some of the bedding I've brought home turns a bit purple-y in there. Your room is looking great so far!

  16. Hi there! I'm curious where you got your dresser - I have almost the exact same one! Mine has the same legs and the same curveature of the top. Mine was my aunt's bedroom set when she was a little girl and my grandparents had purchased it used for her. I have the entire set and its gorgeous. I'm planning to paint it also because its in pretty rough shape.

  30. I just came across your blog and I LOVE it! BTW- my parents have a desk version of this EXACT same dresser. (It was mine when I was a kid and it's still in my old room) If you're looking for a matching piece and you're ever in the Chicago land area, it's yours. :)
