Stairway to....Upstairs

Our staircase/walk-way is one of my favorite features of our house and it hasn't made an appearance on the ol' blog yet.

Ike wants to know how I have let this happen....

But today is the day!

Here's what we started with...

The railing needed about 1 million clamps to bend it into the proper shape.
(We did most of the building ourselves but this we left to a professional so I don't really know how he did it....other than the 1 million clamps)

After some staining, the addition of spindels, and carpet we now have this...

The walk-way leads to our master.  It's handy for chucking things down onto the couch when we're too lazy to walk downstairs.

I want to rip the carpet up because I would love all wood stairs but that seems dangerous for the dog....and myself!!

What are your thoughts?

  1. You could do a runner down your stairs. That's what I'd love to do. Of course that means both a. refinishing the stairs and b. buying a carpet runner and installing it.

  3. Sarah-
I like the idea of a runner as well but there is just something about all wood stairs that I can't over. A girl can dream! :)

Joi- Thanks! They make me smile!

  4. My experience with all wood stairs is that they are crazy-dangerous if you're only wearing socks. My inlaws have them, and every time we visit I have warn the kids: Shoes or barefeet, but NEVER socks!!

It is beautiful though... : )

  5. Your dog has so much personality!!! The stairs renovation looks gorgeous!!! Wow! Lucky lady. The in progress pics remind me of Tom Hanks in The Money Pit when he runs up and down their new curvy staircase yelling "WE HAVE STAIRS!!!"

  6. Gorgeous. All of it is gorgeous. We're trying wood stairs in the next house, so I'll have to let you know how many times (a day) I slip and fall. It will probably happen more than I care to admit. And I'm pretty worried that the dogs will scratch it all up. Glutton for punishment.

  9. I just found your blog and I love your house! As for the stairs...we have wood stairs and have never slipped on them, even in socks. I was worried with small children but decided to give it a go...no problems so far...knock on wood! : ) hee hee...

  10. Growing up we had wooden stairs and I rarely fell down them (though I did trip going up them several times ~ but I did that everywhere).

In my current home, we had wooden stairs and I never fell up or down them, even in socks. Oddly enough, since carpeting them (to make them safer for the kids), I have fallen down them several times. Go figure.

  11. My parents put in hardwood stairs around two and a half years ago. Within three weeks of completion a visitor fell down the stairs. About six months later I was carrying an empty suitcase down to the garage and slipped on the first step from the top while wearing rubber-soled slippers. I rode my back down the remaining 6 steps, and it did not feel good at all. I ended up with a bruise on my back, but fortunately did not break anything or suffer permanent damages.

My father has fallen up the stairs due to the overhanging edge of the wood treads that weren't there when the stairs were previously carpeted. I am constantly reminding my 5 going on 6 year old daughter not to wear socks on the stairs, and always hold the handrail.

  12. Hey would you mind sharing which blog platform
you're working with? I'm looking to start my own blog soon
but I'm having a hard time making a decision between BlogEngine/Wordpress/B2evolution and Drupal. The reason I ask is because your layout seems different then most blogs and I'm looking for
something completely unique. P.S My apologies for getting off-topic but
    I had to ask!
